Beaver students plan blood drive to benefit THON

The Penn State Beaver Dance Marathon (THON) Committee is partnering with the Red Cross to host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 7, in the campus Student Union Building Lodge. For each person who donates blood, the Red Cross will donate $4 to THON to help with pediatric cancer research and provide support for patients and their families.

Hazleton THON to hold bag bingo fundraiser

Penn State Hazleton THON will host a Coach bag bingo fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 3, in the Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium in the physical education building. More than 20 different Coach bags, wallets, wristlets and purses will be given away as prizes during the event. Cost for the event is $25.

All proceeds benefit the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, THON for short, the world's largest student-run philanthropy, which raises money for the fight against pediatric cancer at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. Last year, Penn State students raised more than $9.5 million.

Red Cross to give $4 to THON for each unit of blood donated

A partner with the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON) since 2001, the American Red Cross will make a $4 donation ($8 for double red) for each unit of blood given now through Feb. 16, the start of THON. Each cash donation will go to the Four Diamonds Fund in honor of each presenting donor. This donation can be credited to any THON-registered student organization's THON total.

York THON Committee to host blood drive Jan. 28

Penn State York's THON Committee is partnering with the American Red Cross for a THON Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 28, in the conference center of the Main Classroom Building. The drive is open to the public.

Blood is needed and one donor can save up to three lives. The American Red Cross will make a donation to THON for each unit donated. Proceeds go to the campus THON committee's effort to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The Four Diamonds Fund helps children with cancer and their families. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, email Kara Smith at kjs5375@psu.edu or sign up in the Student Affairs office in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center on campus.

New Kensington campus announces its four THON dancers

Move over Kim and Kourtney, Snookie and Jwow, and Honey Boo Boo and Mama June. A new group of "reality" stars is about to debut -- Penn State New Kensington's THON dancers.

Aric Fellers, Leigh Hastings, Courtney Rockwell and Bill Staniszewski were selected as this year's campus representatives for the annual Penn State Interfraternity Council/ Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON. As opposed to Pete Rose's scripted reality, THON is real reality. A live webcast will be available at http://webcast.thon.psu.edu/.

THON reveals 'Dance With Us' video for Feb. 16 global dance

Now less than one month away, Penn State's Dance Marathon (THON) will be held Feb. 15-17 at the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. THON volunteers have unveiled the official 30-second video and tutorial for a new event, "Dance With Us," to help dancers worldwide get on their feet and experience the spirit, energy and atmosphere of THON Weekend while supporting the fight against pediatric cancer.

At 6:45 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, Feb. 16, participants from around the world will be able to participate in the line dance and join dancers at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center via live stream on the Facebook page. The 30-second Dance With Us line dance video has been posted to THON's official Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pennstateTHON, along with an extended video tutorial for participants to learn the lyrics and moves in advance of THON Weekend and the global Dance With Us dance party.

New fitness class prepares THON dancers, volunteers

Penn State's "no sleeping, no sitting" IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) is not only the equivalent of two all-nighters back-to-back, but THON regulations require participants to remain on their feet for the entire 46-hour event. Many participants don't adequately prepare themselves and either do not make it to the end of the marathon or get sick after. This year, new fitness classes are being offered jointly by THON and the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) to help prepare the bodies of the students involved in THON. The class's goal is to help them be in the best health possible and to help mitigate some of the grueling effects of being on one's feet for 46 straight hours.

With a month to go before the granddaddy of fundraising events, Penn State New Kensington is picking up the donations pace in January with a series of activities that supports Penn State's annual dance marathon, aka THON. The schedule includes a fitness night, spaghetti dinner and tossing pies at your favorite professors.

Alumni Society to host Dance for a Cure THON event

The Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society will host Dance for a Cure, a fundraiser to benefit THON and the Four Diamonds Fund, from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. on Jan. 25 at Mixx Sports Bar in Allentown, Pa. The event, which will feature a variety of dance styles that attendees can learn, is open to adults age 21 and over, and tickets are $15.

THON 2013 invites the world to 'Dance With Us' in Feb. 16 event

Penn State Dance Marathon -- known affectionately as THON and the world's largest student-run philanthropy -- kicks off THON Weekend 2013 on Friday, Feb. 15, at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center for 46 hours of consecutive dancing in support of children, families and researchers fighting pediatric cancer. Midway through the event, at 6:45 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, Feb. 16, THON is inviting everyone, everywhere to take part in "Dance With Us," the first global coordinated dance for charity, to raise awareness of pediatric cancer.

A 30-second instructional line dance video will be released on THON's official Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pennstateTHON on Wednesday, Jan. 16, offering a tutorial for participants to learn the lyrics and moves in advance of THON Weekend. "We anticipate this program to inspire line dances and viewing parties for THON Weekend across the globe," said Will Martin, overall chairperson for THON. "This will allow Penn State fans and pediatric cancer fighters to feel like they are in the Bryce Jordan Center from any location."

Mini-THON, spaghetti dinner raise $6,200 for cancer research

More than 250 people from the community participated recently in two Penn State New Kensington fundraisers for pediatric cancer research.

The off-campus events -- Burrell Bucs Dance for a Cure and Spaghetti Dinner -- brought in $6,288 for THON, formally known as the Penn State Interfraternity Council/ Panhellenic Dance Marathon. The 46-hour, no sitting, no sleeping marathon in February at Penn State University Park raises money for the Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.

Kelsie Nury, a sophomore in the Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management program, is the THON chairwoman for the New Kensington campus. She has set a goal of $55,000, which would be the campus' high-water mark.

Second annual Penn State Worthington Scranton Zumba-THON a success

The second annual Zumba-THON at Penn State Worthington Scranton (PSWS), sponsored by the PSWS Alumni Society and the campus' Blue and White Society, was a great success, beating last year's totals for attendance and fundraising.

More than 100 dancers participated in the event, which took place Nov. 28 in the campus gymnasium. Local Zumba instructors volunteered their time and skills to lead the dancers during the two-hour event, which raised more than $1,200. Last year's event had about 100 participants and $1,000 was raised.

Participants paid a $5 donation at the door, with all the proceeds going to THON. Campus groups and local businesses also donated a variety of items, which were raffled off during the event.

Penn State York shatters THON fundraising record

Penn State York dancers Jimmy Clark, 19, of Red Lion, Pa., and Kara Smith, 22, of York, Pa., danced two nights away and completed the 46-hour annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), Feb. 15 to 17, at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State's University Park campus. THON raised a record-breaking $12,374,034.46 for the Four Diamonds Fund, topping the $10.6 million raised in 2012. Money raised through THON is used to help children with cancer at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Penn State York broke its own record by raising $22,550.53 and shattered the previous campus record of $17,160.71.

The Penn State Fayette THON team — a group of 55 Fayette students — raised a campus-record $93,173.48 for THON 2013. This year, THON teams across Penn State campuses raised a combined $12,374,034.46 in an effort to fight pediatric cancer, topping last year’s record $10.6 million.

Penn State Altoona surpasses $100,000 THON goal

Penn State students have more than 12 million reasons to celebrate this week as their fundraising efforts to fight pediatric cancer have paid off in a big way. A record total of $12,374,034.46 was revealed during the Feb. 17 culmination of THON, the 46-hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon. Penn State Altoona was responsible for more than $100,000 of that, breaking its own goal, being the first commonwealth campus ever to raise that sum, and raising the most of all the commonwealth campuses.

Patrons who still are in line are asked to return home. Those who need to warm up can visit gymnasium three at the IM Building, on the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road.

In a game that came down to the final seconds, Penn State (8-16, 0-12 Big Ten) missed on two late opportunities to tie or take the lead and suffered a 74-72 setback to Iowa (16-9, 5-7 Big Ten) Thursday (Feb. 14) night before a raucous student crowd of 1,420 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State coach Patrick Chambers will donate $14,200 to Penn State Dance Marathon 2013, fulfilling his pledge to donate $10 for every Penn State student who attended the contest on the eve of the 46-hour THON event, which kicks off Friday.

Penn State (8-15; 0-11 Big Ten) will face Iowa (15-9; 4-7 Big Ten) on the Thursday night in the Bryce Jordan Center on the eve of Penn State Dance Marathon. Nittany Lion coach Patrick Chambers has pledged to donate $10 to THON 2013 for every Penn State student that attends the 9 p.m. tip on ESPNU. It will also be Dollar Dog Night at the Jordan Center.
