'Smartpen' pilot program helps students with disabilities

In fall 2011, Penn State's Office for Disability Services (ODS) introduced a pilot program with the benefit of new technology to help students with note-taking. Students are loaned "smartpens," which use unique paper to record audio and digitize the notes written and the audio heard. The resulting digital content can be uploaded to a student's computer, and it is helping students with disabilities improve their classroom and studying experiences.

Tech.it.U Institute set for July 9-13 in York

There's still time to register for the Tech.it.U Institute, a course offered by Penn State York and hosted at Central York High School, July 9-13. Tech.it.U is a premier educational technology conference and graduate course designed to inspire and generate practical classroom ideas designed to help educators teach with power and focus to impact the future of their students. This year's weeklong institute, "Technology and the Highly Engaged Classroom," can be taken for graduate credit or for Act 48 hours. Sessions begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4:15 p.m.

Dykehouse named new CIO at Penn State Hershey

Penn State Hershey Medical Center has named a new chief information officer. Tom Abendroth, M.D., who has served as the Medical Center's CIO since 2002, will become its first chief of medical informatics later this summer.

Program encourages girls to pursue careers using math and science

Gadgets, Gizmos, and Gigabytes: Classrooms of the 21st Century, Cell-A-Bration, Dazzling Databases, "Sparkling" with Chemistry, DNA Detectives, and The Science of Color in Cosmetics are just a few of the workshops being offered this year during the 16th annual program to encourage young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) on Friday, May 11 at Penn State York. Pathways to Your Future: Exploring STEM Careers begins at 8:45 a.m. in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building on campus. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Seventh grade girls, their teachers, and some parents representing 26 schools (public, private, charter, and cyber) will take part in this career awareness program. Some 315 people (students, parents, and teachers) will be participating in the free program.

Faculty speakers series continues with topic of social media dangers

The Penn State Beaver Spring Faculty Speakers Series will continue next month when LaVarr McBride, instructor in administration of justice, presents "How to Avoid the Harms of Social Media," noon, Wednesday, March 14, in room 16, Student Union Building. The program is free and open to the public. McBride will discuss the potential dangers of modern technology and social media, including sharing personal information and photos on the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, texting, cyber bullying, and cell phone use. Students invited to 'Explore the Worlds' March 3 at Penn State York

Middle and high school students will be able to learn about engineering, science, and information sciences and technology on Saturday, March 3, at Penn State York's "Explore the Worlds" event. The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will offer hands-on activities. A series of workshops for parents about choosing a college and paying for college also will be offered throughout the day. Registration is free, and complimentary lunch will be served.

STEM certificate helps prepare students for jobs of the future

Penn State York is continuing to offer the Chancellor's Honor Certificate in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), designed to provide students with the skills they need for jobs in the 21st century. Studies have shown that the demand for students with STEM degrees continues to grow. The certificate is designed for high school students taking part in the dual enrollment program.

Through dual enrollment, high school students can earn college credit while still in high school. A variety of courses are available at the campus for dual enrollment and courses toward the STEM certificate are included. High school juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 and qualifying Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores are eligible to take part in the program.

Latest technology draws attention of top China law school

Dean Wan Meng and Associate Dean Russell Leu of Beijing Foreign Studies University School of Law visited Penn State Law recently, exploring ways to increase opportunities for J.D. and LL.M. students in Beijing. They took part in real-time videoconferencing in the Lewis Katz Building and learned about Penn State Law videoconference events with counterparts in Uganda, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Wan Meng and Leu were interested in learning more about the equipment, its design, and cost; replicating the same technology could help BFSU Law School expand its international reach.

Campus will host meeting for STEM education advocates

Penn State Beaver will host a meeting of the Beaver County Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Advocacy Coalition, 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, room 16, Student Union Building. The program is free and open to the public.

The evening's topic is "Proven Strategies to Compete in Regional and International Science Fairs." Guest speakers are Lisa Kosick, director of the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair, and Karen DeMarco, a science teacher for the Ambridge Area School District.

Medical Center among top 25 connected health care facilities

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has received a 2011 Health Imaging and IT Top 25 Connected Healthcare Facilities award. The award is given annually by Health Imaging and IT magazine to institutions that demonstrate extensively developed clinical image distribution systems and advanced electronic medical records (EMR).

Penn State's new Center for Global Studies recently hosted a live videoconference event "From Lab to the Field: An International Discussion of Affordable Technologies" on April 22. Teams of Penn State students and researchers shared their research on innovations for developing countries with researchers at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. In turn, the Uganan researchers presented information on their projects as well as challenges that they face in implementing the processes.
