Penn State team questions dogma in synthetic biology events

Six Penn State students recently participated in a competition in Boston that examined the building blocks of life. It was an experience they won't soon forget. They qualified for the international event sponsored by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- which involved 190 collegiate teams with nearly 3,000 participants from more than 30 countries -- by winning gold at a regional synthetic biology contest earlier in the fall in Pittsburgh.

York women's basketball team creates cards for troops in Afghanistan

Members of the Penn State York women's basketball team worked recently to create holiday cards for soldiers just deployed to Afghanistan. Terri Van Slyke, assistant basketball coach and admissions counselor at York campus, suggested the project to the team.

York soccer team finsihes season strong, earns honors

Penn State York's men's soccer team once again finished strong with an 8-2 conference record and the regular season championship. For the past five seasons the team has consistently been among the teams to beat in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC).

Conference play proved to be challenging as the Lions earned hard fought victories on the road at Penn State Hazleton and Penn State Brandywine before yielding their only conference loss at rival Penn College. Regular season success was rewarded with the number one seed in the PSUAC tournament. After taking a commanding 2-0 lead at home, York gave up three unanswered goals, two by the way of penalty kicks, and lost their first home match and thus their season came to an early and untimely end.

Soil judging team wins group segment at regionals; going to nationals

Has your mother ever yelled at you for playing in the mud? Students from Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences may be able to trace their college careers back to such humble beginnings.

Two teams from the college recently took first and fourth places in group judging at the regional soil judging competition at the University of Rhode Island, qualifying to compete in the national event hosted by West Virginia University in March.

Amy Burgess to 'serve' as head volleyball coach at Penn State York

Amy Burgess has been named the new women's volleyball coach at Penn State York. Burgess has been working with the team to prepare them for the 2011 season, which is under way.

"We are looking forward to the enthusiasm and knowledge that Amy brings to the women's volleyball program at Penn State York," said Chris Beaverson, interim athletic director at the campus.

Tomaselli named captain of Lady Lions basketball team

Brittany Tomaselli, a Penn State Beaver sophomore education major from East Liverpool, Ohio, has been named captain of the 2011-12 Penn State Beaver Lady Lions basketball team. The announcement was made recently by Lady Lions head coach Bert DeSalvo, supervisor of athletic, intramural and recreational sports and assistant athletic director.

Tomaselli is the team's fourth captain under DeSalvo's guidance since he re-established the women's basketball program at Beaver in 2007 after an absence of more than 20 years. DeSalvo noted that Tomaselli has been a "silent" captain for the team, and he began to prepare her for this new role midway through the year. This season, the 5' 2" point guard played in all 31 games for the Lady Lions. She averaged 24 minutes, 7.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. The Lady Lions finished 23-8 overall, include 14-0 in the PSUAC, and qualified to compete in the USCAA Tournament.
