Campus seeks teaching award nominations for 2012-13

Nominations are being accepted for the 2012-13 James H. Burness Award for Excellence in Teaching at Penn State York. The award given annually to recognize any aspect of excellent instruction (lectures, demonstrations, classroom activities, handling of discussions, individual attention, laboratory instruction, etc.) that contributes to the academic quality of Penn State York. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in instruction, not to identify the "most popular" faculty member. The teaching award is named in memory of the late James H. Burness in recognition of his outstanding teaching and service to the campus. Burness died in December 1999.

Campus faculty member teaching course in new MBA program

Rujirutana Mandhachitara, associate professor of business administration at Penn State New Kensington, was selected to teach a spring course for Penn State's new master of business administration program at the Regional Learning Alliance Center in Cranberry, Pa.

Mandhachitara, known affectionately by her students as "Dr A," is one of three instructors for the course, Demand, Operations and Firm Performance. The course is a part of the second semester curriculum of the program. Administered by Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, the program is a hybrid of 75 percent online instruction and 25 percent in-class instruction, and is geared toward working professionals from the Pittsburgh region. Begun in fall 2012, the MBA is offered in a blended delivery whereby students get classroom instruction once per month and online instruction for the remainder of the course. It is the same curriculum that is offered in the traditional format at The Behrend College.

Alumni couple makes $2 million gift to honor innovative teachers

A Penn State alumni couple is honoring great teachers they have known by making a leadership gift to the colleges of the Liberal Arts and Education with a commitment of $2 million from their estate. Through their gift, Kevin and Susan O'Leary will support an early career professor in history, graduate students in language and literacy education, and innovative teaching awards in both colleges. "Our Penn State professor inspired us to pursue fulfilling careers in business and education, and in return, we want to uplift future generations of innovative teachers at the University," Kevin and Susan said. "We are personally aware of the many challenges facing teachers today, and we want to help them pursue even greater success in teaching students at Penn State and beyond."

Researchers at Penn State identify key elements of quality instruction

A commonly held belief that college students are only interested in courses where they can earn an "easy A" is not supported by a Penn State research study. What college students really value is how much they feel they learn in a course, according to recent findings from a survey.

"In our surveys of students at University Park, we found the single best predictor of how much students liked and positively evaluated the quality of instruction in courses was how much they had learned," said Fern K. Willits, distinguished professor emerita of rural sociology in the College of Agricultural Sciences, one of the members of the research team. "The belief that difficult courses and too much classwork will result in low student ratings is not supported by our data."

Continuing Education is offering graduate class for educators

The Penn State Beaver Office of Continuing Education will offer "Counseling and Teaching Youth at Risk," a three-credit graduate class for teachers and counselors, 5-8:30 p.m., Thursdays, March 1 through May 3 at Lincoln Junior-Senior High School, Ellwood City, Pa.

Penn State and university in Croatia form forensic science partnership

The Eberly College of Science at Penn State University, in conjunction with its Forensic Science Program, has established a partnership program with the University of Split in Croatia to expand educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and to encourage relationships between the faculties of the two universities. The new partnership will facilitate student exchange programs; faculty exchanges; joint research projects; educational programs in forensic science and other scientific disciplines; faculty development; and the exchange of scientific materials, publications and information.

Szymczak honored by Polish American Studies journal

Robert Szymczak, associate professor of history at Penn State Beaver, is the recipient of the Swastek Award given by the Editorial Board of the Polish American Studies journal in recognition of the best article that appeared in the publication in the past year.

Szymczak was honored for his article, "Cold War Crusader: Arthur Bliss Lane and the Private Committee to Investigate the Katyn Massacre, 1949-1952." He will receive the award in January at the awards ceremony hosted by the Polish Consulate in Chicago. Szymczak can be reached at rxs16@psu.edu or 724-773-3895.

Guay earns Smeal's highest teaching award

The Penn State Smeal College of Business has presented Terrence Guay, clinical associate professor of international business, with the 2011 Fred Brand Jr. Outstanding Teacher Award, the college's highest honor for teaching. Guay, who has been a member of the Smeal faculty since 2004, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in international business. The Brand award is named for the late Fred Brand Jr., a 1932 Penn State alumnus and insurance executive who enjoyed a 40-year career with Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co.

New Penn State online program prepares teachers for leadership roles

Educational leadership in the preK-12 arena is no longer solely the responsibility of school principals and superintendents. Today, teacher leaders are needed in the classroom and in other roles to help students keep pace with academic achievement goals. Growth in enrollment of school-aged children coupled with teacher retirements will create 13 percent employment growth for teachers through 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. To help teachers who want to become leaders, Penn State has a new master of education in educational leadership-teacher leadership option delivered entirely online.

Online program offers certificate in teaching English abroad

Penn State Lehigh Valley's Office of Continuing Education is currently accepting enrollments for a new program in Teaching English as a Second Language Abroad (TESLA). This three-week online program provides a basic introduction to teaching English language learners (ELL) in foreign contexts. The program runs May 22-28, May 29-June 4 and June 5-11.

Students, faculty and staff honored at 40th annual awards banquet

Penn State York honored the academic achievements and service of its outstanding students, faculty and staff for the 2010-11 academic year during the 40th annual Academic Awards Banquet, Friday, April 15, in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building. More than 90 academic and service awards were presented following a 6 p.m. dinner.

Awards were presented by a variety of campus groups and several community organizations including the Rotary Club of York and the York County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. Highlights of the program were the presentation of the Eric A. and Josephine Walker Award, the James H. Burness Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Penn State York Advising Award, and the new Clark E. Fisher Memorial Award.

At EdVenture 2011 on Thursday, April 14, the Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine community will celebrate educational accomplishments at Penn State Hershey. This annual event includes a lecture, workshop, poster presentations and awards ceremony. Daniel D. Pratt will present the 2011 Woodward Lecture, "Highly Effective Teaching: Why can't everyone be like me (or you)?"

More than 80 academic and service awards will be presented following a 6 p.m. dinner.

President awards alumnus high honor for teaching

Penn State alumnus Bruce Wellman, a 1991 graduate with a bachelor's degree in science, has been selected by President Barack Obama to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The annual award, one of the nation's highest honors for teachers, is given to the best pre-college-level science and mathematics teachers from across the country.
