Standout Nittany Lion student-athletes Miguel Pineda (Galloway, Ohio) and Erin Thomas (Bangor, Maine) have been honored as Penn State's 2012 recipients of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Both Pineda, a member of the men's gymnastics team, and Thomas, a swimmer, earned All-America honors during their distinguished Penn State careers.

Sophomore standout Amy Modglin earned All-American honors and smashed her own school record in the 200-backstroke while guiding the Penn State women's swimming team to another strong performance on the final day of the NCAA Championships at the Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Saturday evening.

Sophomore standout Amy Modglin has been named the Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season after piecing together a phenomenal effort during Penn State's meet at the University of Maryland last weekend. During the competition, Modglin secured three individual victories while helping lead the Nittany Lions to a dominating performance. Guided by her efforts, Penn State cruised to victories over the host Terrapins as well as intrastate rivals Pittsburgh and Villanova.

Penn State women's swimmer Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) capped off a sensational freshman season this weekend with honorable mention All-America status in the 200 backstroke at the NCAA Championships. She reached Saturday's consolation finals where she placed 16th with a time of 1:56.19. Modglin also competed in the 200 and 400 IM.

The men's swimming and diving team finished the Big Ten Championships Saturday night with in seventh place with a final score of 246. The Lions were narrowly edged out of sixth place by Wisconsin at 248.5. David Kraft led the way in the 1650 freestyle placing 13th in 15:22.55. Dito Calderon wasn't far behind claiming 16th to also score points with a time of 15:24.87.

The Penn State women's swim team advanced to third place at the Big Ten Championships after Thursday's events. The Nittany Lions have collected 27 points. Indiana is currently in first place with 226 points while Minnesota follows in second with 196. "The girls are swimming very, very well," said head coach John Hargis. "They're competing well and we've had some break-through swims which is fun to see."

Penn State senior Caitlin Meehan was honored as the Big Ten's Women's Swimmer of the Week award for the week of Jan. 20, conference officials announced Tuesday (Jan. 20). The West Chester, Pa. native set an NCAA 'B' cut time in the 200-yard breaststroke this past weekend, as she earned the fastest time in the event, 2:14.65, at the Maryland Quad Meet. Meehan and her Nittany Lions earned victories over Maryland, Pittsburgh and Villanova in College Park, Md.
