Founding leader of Penn State Hershey remembered

One of the founding leaders of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, John Waldhausen, has died at the age of 82. Waldhausen was the founding chair of the Department of Surgery at the Medical Center and the College of Medicine and led the department for more than 25 years.

Penn State Impact videos share stories of critical involvement

Across the University, Penn State experts are working together to make significant changes in science and medicine. A new series of Penn State Impact videos highlights some of the collaborative research ongoing at Penn State. The newest video, "Advancing Surgery," shows how collaborative efforts among University researchers in engineering, materials science and medicine aim to improve endoscopic surgeries by shrinking surgeons' tools as well as patients' recovery time.

Health Shorts: Sleep apnea risky during surgery

Persons with sleep apnea are at risk of serious complications when taking certain medications or when under general anesthesia for surgical procedures. Breathing problems are common in a sedated apnea patient lying on his back. Diagnosed patients should be sure to report the condition to their physicians. Undiagnosed sleep apnea presents a substantial risk during surgery.

Children's Hospital offers young brain tumor patients surgical options

Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital is just the third children's hospital in the United States and the first in the Eastern region of the country to acquire a new, minimally invasive neurosurgical medical device that makes pediatric brain and spine tumor removal faster and easier. "The Myriad represents the most significant advance in minimally invasive neurosurgery in the past decade," said Mark Dias, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. "In particular, its use in endoscopic neurosurgery will substantively move the field forward, allowing neurosurgeons much greater flexibility than ever before."

Students explore how science 'operates'

Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center announced today the launch of an innovative new partnership designed to stimulate the interest of high school students in careers in health care. With funding provided by Highmark Blue Shield, Surgery Live! at Whitaker Center's Harsco Science Center will allow students to enter the operating rooms of Penn State Hershey Medical Center through interactive high definition videoconferencing technology.

Heart failure can make even walking around the house too strenuous. Unlike a heart attack, in which heart muscle dies from lack of blood, patients with heart failure have hearts that are chronically too weak to pump the blood their bodies need. The 400,000 Americans who are diagnosed with this condition annually can only wait for the remote chance that one of the 2,300 donor hearts will be a match for transplant. They know an artificial heart is still years from being as common as an artificial hip.

On screen those surgical pincers look big as battery clamps, the "blood vessel" like a length of sturdy rope. Even so, I'm biting my lip. Again I nudge a little forward with the left hand, close the grip, and come up empty. "That 2-D camera takes a little getting used to," the technician concedes. Nudge, close, empty. Nudge, close—and at last I've got a hold of that strand of red-striped twine. Look, Ma! I'm a cardiac surgeon!
