Career Fair brings together students, residents and employers May 17

Pennsylvania’s improving job market is reflected in its unemployment rate, now 7.2 percent in central Pennsylvania, as more companies ramp up hiring. Central Pennsylvania residents who want to learn about job opportunities in this region are invited to attend the sixth annual Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 17, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in Innovation Park. More than 65 employers will be at the event.

Penn Stater clears educational hurdles, wins adult student award

Growing up in Kansas with religious parents concerned about the morality of public school, Neil Meyer had no real educational structure after the second grade and never completed his homeschooling. When he turned 18, he moved out of his parents’ house and made his way to Pennsylvania. Now a junior majoring in psychology with a neuroscience option, Meyer has been honored with the 2013 Penn State Outstanding Adult Student Award.

Adult education information session set for April 18 at Schlow Library

Penn State will host a free information session for adults interested in continuing their education from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at Schlow Centre Region Library in downtown State College at the corner of Allen and Beaver avenues. Check in and refreshments will take place from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

Laing honored with Hendrick Award for service to adult learners

Leslie Laing, assistant director of adult learner programs and services in the Division of Student Affairs, has been honored with the 2013 Shirley Hendrick Award, presented by the Penn State Commission for Adult Learners for service to adult learners.

Penn State Continuing Education, World Campus, Student Affairs and Undergraduate Admissions are hosting a free information session for employees eligible for University tuition reimbursement. Spouses of employees also may attend. The session will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in 129 HUB–Robeson Center at University Park campus.

To help celebrate Women's History Month, the Center for Women Students at Penn State is hosting women's rights advocate Sandra Fluke. Well known for testifying before the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee as a law student on the need to provide access to contraception, Fluke since has spoken about this and other women's issues of concern on a national level.

Penn State’s Center for Ethics and Religious Affairs, and the Center for Women Students will once again host a program to raise awareness about various forms of violence and the incredible journeys of survivors who find a way to move forward despite their pain and struggle.

It's not too soon for students to start preparing for Penn State's Spring Career Days, to be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 20 and 21 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus. More than 300 employers will attend, hiring for internship, full-time and co-op positions. Career Services is offering a series of workshops prior to the event to help students create a personalized plan to feel confident and prepared to attend.

HealthWorks application deadline approaching

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State students who are interested in promoting health among their peers can apply to participate in HealthWorks, a student peer education and outreach program within University Health Services (UHS). Membership applications will be accepted through March 1 for the 2013-14 school year.

Fraternity, sorority leaders curb drinking, promote service

Penn State students are leading efforts to minimize the impact of dangerous drinking at State Patty's Day, a potentially destructive drinking event created by students on social media. For the second year in a row, Penn State's Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils are restricting parties over State Patty's Day weekend. The councils, composed of fraternity and sorority life leaders, have banned parties on Friday, Feb. 22, and social functions on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Register now for 2012 Parents & Families Weekend at University Park

Registration is now open for 2012 Parents & Families Weekend, to be held Sept. 28-30 at University Park. The preliminary schedule of events and registration website for the weekend is available at http://www.parents.psu.edu/parents&familiesweekend.shtml online. Registration for the overall weekend is requested on or before Friday, Sept. 21.

While the majority of the 80+ events and programs require no additional RSVP and are offered free of charge to participants, select events do require an RSVP, payment, or tickets ahead of time. Some of these events may sell out quickly. We encourage you to visit the website at your earliest convenience. After completing the overall event registration, you will be directed to ticket and registration information for the events that require additional action.

Since events are being added daily, please be sure to check the Parents & Families Weekend website regularly to view the most updated schedule. Please contact the Parents Program at parents@psu.edu with additional questions.
