Town-gown partnership seeks 'alcohol-free' downtown on State Patty's Day

A town-gown partnership that for more than a decade has been united against high-risk drinking is employing new tactics to keep downtown State College alcohol-free on what has become known as "State Patty's Day."

An agreement has been reached with downtown State College taverns and restaurants to halt the sale of alcohol on Feb. 23, the date set for this year's State Patty’s Day, an event created by students six years ago. Establishments will still offer food and non-alcoholic drinks, maintaining downtown’s appeal for responsible visitors.

As the student-organized "State Patty's Day" approaches this month, town-and-gown initiatives are taking form to weaken the destructive annual gathering centered on the over-consumption of alcohol.

Since 2007, the artificial holiday known as "State Patty's Day" has led to an increase in alcohol overdoses, arrests, vandalism and litter, creating a generally inhospitable atmosphere in town. Attracting attention beyond the campus community, the event has been detrimental to the reputation of Penn State students, even though many of the day's revelers travel from outside University Park.

Roger Williams, executive director of the Penn State Alumni Association, penned the following column for the February 2012 issue of Alumni Insider, an e-newsletter for Alumni Association members. In his column, he addresses campus and community concerns about State Patty's Day and notes the actions that Penn State students, with the Alumni Association and other campus and State College community leaders, are taking to coordinate a "wide range of interventions."

Letter signed by 17 student leaders seeks State Patty's Day restraint

The following letter, drafted by the Student Alcohol Advisory Committee -- and signed by 17 student organization presidents and student leaders representing undergraduate student government and prominent social, cultural and service organizations -- was delivered Thursday, Feb. 9, to several downtown State College retail stores and bottle shops. The letter requests their cooperation in not supporting or participating in "State Patty's Day," an event contrived for the purpose of excessive alcohol consumption.
