As Penn State's spring break 2013 commences next week (March 3 to 9), students from the Lehigh Valley campus will embark on excursions designed to take their learning outside of the classroom and into the real world. Students traveling to Mexico and Rome will do so as part of course-embedded short term study abroad experiences, while another group of students heads to West Virginia to perform community service in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
The popular perception that college students are reaching new levels of self-indulgence and risky behavior during spring break excursions may be based on media coverage and scholarship that oversimplifies what has become an annual rite for many young adults, according to researchers.
The researchers, who reported their findings in the current issue of Tourism Review International, said that since much of the research is based on data derived from self-reporting surveys, students may skew their actual behaviors.
Penn State Beaver students and faculty who spent last month's spring break working and living with the Navajo Nation recently gave a presentation about their experiences. The program was the final event in the 2011-2012 Penn State Beaver Faculty Speakers Series. The series will resume in the fall semester. The group of 11 students, faculty, and staff spent the week in Tuba City, Arizona, where they tutored classes in the local boarding school, served Meals on Wheels for the Senior Center, volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, and cleaned Navajo residents' homes. Evenings were focused on learning about the Navajo Nation culture, including creation stories, dances, and ceremonies. In addition, the group visited several famous sites, including the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert. The trip was led by JoAnn Chirico, senior instructor in sociology; Irene Wolf, senior instructor in philosophy, and Robin Schreck, student activities and residence life coordinator. Individuals who may be traveling during spring break to any locale are urged to use common sense precautions. Several schools have reported some level of infestation. Penn State is taking a proactive approach to prevent bedbugs from showing up in residence halls. Students need to be on the lookout for signs of the undercover critters in their rooms, and help campus sleep tight every night.

The first group of nine students will travel to the La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica to explore environmental conservation and ecology issues in a rain forest environment from March 2-9. A second group of students will travel to Tennessee from March 5-12 where they will join students from other area colleges in a long-term service project at the Snowbird Cherokee Community.
Next month's spring break will find some Penn State Beaver students scattered across the globe. Students will travel with their professors to Spain and Italy as others implement outreach and support services through Young People Who Care, Inc. of Frenchville, Pa., and the Caritas healthcare system. The words "cold" and "rainy" don't describe most students' ideal spring break destination -- unless students are interested in golf management. Scotland is known for its cloudy skies but, more importantly, it is where golf originated, so it provides a unique historical outlook on the sport.
Twenty-two Penn State students in the Professional Golf Management (PGM) option of the Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management degree program spent their spring break in St. Andrews, Scotland, where they had the chance to play on some of the oldest golf courses in the world, meet with head golf pros and see different operation styles, and learn about the golf's history.
