Students 'Sign the Beam' to commemorate new residence hall

Since construction began this past May, the renovations and new construction at the South Halls residential area have seen significant progress. Recently, students had a chance to leave their mark. Those walking through Redifer Commons could sign their names on the last two beams that will be installed in the steel structure of the new residence hall.

South Halls renovations, addition approved, scheduled for spring start

A major renovation to all four duplex residence-hall buildings of the 55-year-old South Halls complex at University Park was approved Friday (March 16) by Penn State's Board of Trustees. Totaling $94.1 million and funded by a combination of Housing and Food Service reserves and debt to be repaid by housing, construction will begin later this spring and continue through December 2014. The project includes the addition of a new residence hall and significant, long-deferred infrastructure upgrades.

Uncertainty of state funds forces hold on projects

Penn State trustees today (March 18) put a hold on all new building projects due to uncertainty in the appropriation the University may receive from the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett has proposed more than $660 million in cuts to public institutions of higher education. The cuts proposed for Penn State alone represent a decrease of $182 million, or 52.4 percent, in state funding for next year. In an unprecedented move, the Board of Trustees opted to endorse the architectural selections for projects under consideration, but postponed final authorization for any capital projects to proceed until the funding picture becomes more clear, according to Al Horvath, senior vice president for finance and business.
