Trustees approve global engagement in South Africa

The Penn State Board of Trustees today (July 13) took a step in support of the University's global engagement efforts by approving the creation of a trust in South Africa to facilitate research, education and outreach, contingent upon approval of the University's Office of General Counsel.

"One of Penn State's strategic goals is to realize our potential as a global university," said Penn State President Rodney Erickson. "We are doing this not by building physical facilities overseas, but rather by selectively partnering with existing universities around the world."

Editor's note: During Spring Break, 16 Penn State students made their way to Cape Town, South Africa, as part of a weeklong journalism expedition led by Tony Barbieri, professor of writing and editing. The immersive project is part of Barbieri's course on "International Reporting." In this final entry, Andy Colwell describes the experience of shark cage diving, an opportunity afforded to him, fellow student Lexi Belculfine and professor Thor Wasbotten as part of the students' investigative piece on the relationship between shark cage diving and shark attacks on surfers. Shark-inhabited waters might not seem like the best choice for doing research on a journalism story in South Africa - unless, of course, those sharks are the reason for doing the story.

The evening consisted of traditional Xhosa face painting, food from all over the continent and traditional African music at Cape Town restaurant Africa Cafe.

In this entry, Audrey Snyder writes about the importance of soccer in Cape Town and shares her experience at Green Point Stadium. *** From leftover World Cup posters and banners hanging in shop windows to the array of soccer jerseys seen on the street, it's obvious that soccer is much more than just a game here. In order to try and see for myself just how much of an impact the 2010 FIFA World Cup had on Cape Town, I headed out for a tour of Green Point Stadium.

Our tour (of Apartheid-era Robben Island political prison) was led by Kgotso Ntsoelengoe, a former prisoner of the site, who knew Nelson Mandela personally during their coinciding stay during the 1970s and 1980s.

To get to Cape Town, South Africa from University Park, Pa., it takes one bus trip, three flights, seven time zones, 18 hours and countless doses of perseverance. Our home for the next six days was Cape Town, South Africa, the southernmost major city of the southernmost African country, which has been the subject of our study throughout the previous two months.

Research tackles drug use, HIV in South African youth

Drug use, risky sexual behavior and violence among South African youth may be reduced thanks to Penn State researchers, who will look at expanding a leisure education and life skills program to 56 South African high schools. The researchers, led by Linda Caldwell, professor of recreation, park, and tourism management, and Edward Smith, associate director of the Penn State Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development, received a $2.8 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Thompson receives Fulbright award for work in South Africa

Anne Thompson, professor of meteorology in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research at Northwest University Potchoftstroom in South Africa during the 2010-11 academic year, according to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board.

"If you walked in the streets in 18th or 19th century Cape Town, and you looked at the people in the street, you would not be able to tell by skin color who was a slave owner and who was a slave. There was heavy regulation about what clothing slaves could wear, whether they could congregate in larger numbers than two or three at a time, whether they could travel at night without carrying a pass or carrying a lantern. They were never able to travel at night without being lighted in some way." Professor, students travel to South Africa this summer

Rick Brazier, associate professor of mathematics and geoscience at Penn State DuBois, will take students to South Africa this summer to participate in an eight week field course at the AfricaAffray Geophysical Field School in Johannesburg. Students will be exposed to geophysics field methods, modeling methods commonly used in hydrocarbon, mineral and water exploration, and basic earth science research.

Students experience poverty and the role of South African nurses

A class of six nursing students that recently traveled to South Africa to learn first-hand how the role of a nurse differs from country to country, recently gathered with other students involved in international nursing trips to share a video they created during and after the trip. The event was sponsored by Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.

Partnerships work to improve life in South Africa

Mitchell's Plain is a large, sprawling township near Cape Town in South Africa. It contains monotonous rows of houses built about 20 years ago for the "coloured" population -- one of the racial groups designated under the Apartheid system to refer to people of mixed-race. A community marked by high unemployment and poverty, there are public schools here that lock the doors during the day and are surrounded by barbed wire to keep out gangs; daily realities among students include drug addiction, pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Despite some grim conditions in Mitchell's Plain, there is plenty to be positive about: Thanks to a Penn State-led initiative and dedicated partners, youth in the area have reported they are less likely to start drinking, less likely to smoke and have an increased knowledge of condom use.
