Researchers at Penn State identify key elements of quality instruction

A commonly held belief that college students are only interested in courses where they can earn an "easy A" is not supported by a Penn State research study. What college students really value is how much they feel they learn in a course, according to recent findings from a survey.

"In our surveys of students at University Park, we found the single best predictor of how much students liked and positively evaluated the quality of instruction in courses was how much they had learned," said Fern K. Willits, distinguished professor emerita of rural sociology in the College of Agricultural Sciences, one of the members of the research team. "The belief that difficult courses and too much classwork will result in low student ratings is not supported by our data."

University Park, Pa. -- The Schreyer Honors College is mourning the loss of William A. Schreyer whose family's extraordinary contributions to Penn State established the college that bears his name. Schreyer, 83, a 1948 graduate of Penn State, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, in Princeton, N.J.

In a statement released today (Jan. 23), Penn State Board of Trustees President Steve Garban announced the death and mourned the loss of William A. Schreyer, chairman emeritus of Merrill Lynch & Co Inc., and one of the University's most prominent alumni and supporters. Schreyer, a class of 1948 graduate who served as president of Penn State's Board of Trustees and as chair of its first major fundraising campaign, died in Princeton, N.J., on Jan. 22. Schreyer's legacy includes the nationally recognized honors college at Penn State that bears his name.

Panel discussion to focus on evaluation of online courses on May 24

The Penn State Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence is holding a panel discussion titled "How Can the Teaching of Online Courses be Evaluated for Promotion and Tenure?" from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in room 315 of the Rider Building on Penn State's University Park campus. The discussion also will be available via Polycom at Penn State's Erie, DuBois and University Park campuses.

Graduate student coffee hour Oct. 22

Graduate students are invited to an informal coffee hour, sponsored by the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, where they can come together, share teaching ideas, concerns and resources. The event will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, in room 312 at the HUB-Robeson Center.

It is still not too late to register for the fourth Schreyer National Conference, "Educating for Sustainability," set for Oct. 5 and 6 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The purpose of the conference is to connect new and existing sustainability initiatives across disciplines and campuses to establish a cohesive community committed to integrating sustainability into the curriculum and making it one of the defining features of a Penn State education. The conference will be held from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 6. "Educating for Sustainability" is open to Penn State faculty, staff, students and administrators at no charge -- however, space is limited and advanced registration is required. Schreyer Honors College celebrates inaugural Founders Day

The Schreyer Honors College held its first Founders Day celebration on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Alumni Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus. The event celebrated the college's founding and heritage. The celebration included special music by members of student choir "Essence of Joy," the unveiling of a photo mosaic featuring photos of Schreyer Honors College students and staff and the announcement of a new Berkey Creamery ice cream flavor, "Scholars Chip", created for the Honors College in honor of its founder, William A. Schreyer. Students and staff enjoyed cake and ice cream during the event.

Three Brandywine students join prestigious group of honors scholars

Three Penn State Brandywine students have been accepted to one of the University's most esteemed academic programs: the Schreyer Honors Program.

Junior Jonathan Hartline, information sciences and technology, of Parkside; sophomore John Formento, business, of Oaks; and junior Christopher Collins, American studies, of Philadelphia, join five other students on the Brandywine campus who are also part of this prestigious University-wide group.
