Spring 2013 SAGE lecture series kicks off March 1

Senior Adults Gaining Enrichment (SAGE), an outreach program of Penn State Lehigh Valley, has announced the schedule for its spring 2013 four-part lecture series. Each SAGE session consists of coffee at 10:30 a.m., the featured speaker at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon. All lectures take place in Room 135 at Penn State Lehigh Valley in Center Valley. The spring schedule is:

Friday, March 1
"Our Lehigh Valley, Then and Now"
Amy Burkett, station manager, PBS39/WLVT
Burkett will share her perspective on issues affecting the citizens of the Lehigh Valley as well as the changes she has seen in the community through her career in public broadcasting in the region.

The Arts Project announces new workshop for adults, age 55-plus

The Arts Project at Penn State Lehigh Valley has announced a new workshop for adults, age 55-plus. Watercolor, instructed by James Doddy, will be held May 8, 15 and 22. The cost of the class is $50. The campus offers newly renovated studio facilities and is conveniently located across from the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley.

SAGE talk will mark Allentown's 250th birthday and campus centennial

Senior Adults Gaining Enrichment (SAGE), an outreach program of Penn State Lehigh Valley, will welcome Frank Whelan of the Lehigh County Historical Society to discuss the history of Allentown on April 13. The event also will include a birthday cake and special gifts to mark the occasion of Penn State Lehigh Valley's centennial. The SAGE session begins with coffee at 10:30 a.m., the featured speaker at 11 a.m., and lunch at noon. The lecture takes place in room 135 at Penn State Lehigh Valley, 2809 Saucon Valley Road, Center Valley, Pa.

Pierce receives professional development teaching award

Mari B. Pierce, assistant professor of administration of justice at Penn State Beaver, is the recipient of the 2012 SAGE Junior Faculty Professional Development Teaching Award. The SAGE award is given to nontenured faculty and doctoral level teaching assistants who meet eligibility criteria and show significant promise as teachers. The $700 award is funded by SAGE Publications, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), and participating SAGE authors, was developed to help defray the cost of the recipient's attendance at the annual ACJS Professional Development Teaching Workshop and Meeting in New York City in March 2012. The ACJS is an international association established in 1963 to foster professional and scholarly activities in the field of criminal justice. ACJS promotes criminal justice education, research, and policy analysis within the discipline of criminal justice for both educators and practitioners. Senior Adults Gaining Enrichment (SAGE), an outreach program of Penn State Lehigh Valley, will host Emory Guffrovich, director of enrollment management at Penn State Lehigh Valley, on April 2, at the Corporate Learning Center in Bethlehem, Pa. Guffrovich will present "The Vietnam Conflict: Its Implications on Today's Events."

Senior Adults Gaining Enrichment (SAGE), an outreach program of Penn State Lehigh Valley, will hold the first lecture of its four-part series on March 5. Each SAGE session begins with coffee at 10:30 a.m., the featured speaker at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon. The speaker for the first session is Robert Mateff director of emergency management services for Northampton County and vice-chairperson of the Northeast PA Counter Terrorism Task Force, who will discuss, "What Does Homeland Security Look Like in our Hometown?"
