Ben Pugh and Matt Bonczek, both seniors in the Penn State Smeal College of Business, have each passed five of the necessary exams toward their actuarial science accreditation — a unique distinction, according to Ron Gebhardtsbauer, clinical associate professor of actuarial science.

The Penn State Smeal College of Business is hosting a research symposium on April 30 featuring some of the nation's leading risk management scholars. The symposium will focus on research on risk management and catastrophic events, which are events of low probability but of substantial economic impact (e.g., natural disasters). The symposium starts at 8 a.m. on April 30 in Smeal's Business Building on Penn State's University Park campus.

The Penn State Smeal College of Business is offering a new major, the bachelor of science in risk management, which will be housed in the restructured Department of Risk Management and have three concentration options: actuarial science, enterprise risk management, and real estate. The new Department of Risk Management represents a restructuring of the former Department of Insurance and Real Estate. The research and disciplinary focus of the department is on risk assessment, mitigation and management, connecting disciplines such as actuarial science, business law, decision analysis, insurance, international business, and real estate.

Just mentioning the word 'risk' makes some people nervous. Risk is something that few beyond the world of poker, sky diving or NASCAR are willing to take on. But mention risk to Gary Langsdale and he sees an opportunity for change. As Penn State's risk manager, Langsdale is charged with identifying the University's potential risks and helping people assess, eliminate, reduce, avoid or manage these risks. Everything from data security, student behaviors, pandemics, laboratory environments, weather emergencies and more -- these are the events and operations that Langsdale knows if not handled correctly could threaten Penn State's ability to achieve its goals.

Penn State's Gary Langsdale was awarded with a national honor for his success in developing and maintaining risk management practices at Penn State and in the community. Langsdale was named as one of three risk managers in the country to make Business Insurance's elite 2009 Risk Management Honor Roll. As the University's risk officer, he provides assistance and guidance in developing risk awareness at all corners of the University.

Running an institution like Penn State can be risky business, and that is why the University is taking extra steps to identify risks and prepare itself for all possible outcomes. Finance and Business's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Key Initiative Team and the Risk Management Office are spreading the word about risk awareness to the Penn State community through several modes of communication and education opportunities, including safety programs, risk training and online communications. According to the new F&B Strategic Plan, the ERM Key Initiative's goals include providing tools to the University community to enable them to make better risk-adjusted decisions, raise awareness throughout the University and embed the concept of "management of risk" into the University's overall planning.

Risk affects everyone. Whether it is making huge financial decisions or everyday life choices, evaluating risks and being properly prepared for all possible outcomes increases the chance of success. That is why Penn State's Finance & Business Enterprise Risk Management Key Initiative and the Human Resource Development Center (HRDC) teamed up to offer a new course that will provide tools to accurately identify risks and handle them to help increase the chance of success for a project. "Getting everyone at Penn State to be consciously focused on risks is a top priority for us," said Gary Langsdale, University risk officer. "Being aware of risks exudes confidence and makes every one a better manager and a better decision maker."
