University, TIAA-CREF contest to help employees improve 'financial IQ'

Penn State Employee Benefits' Health Matters Office, in partnership with TIAA-CREF, is holding a contest to help employees hone their financial planning skills. All University employees will receive an email with an invitation to participate in a "Financial IQ" quiz; participants will be entered into a raffle for one of three iPads.

Jan Orris to retire as continuing education director at campus

Jan Orris, director of continuing education at Penn State New Kensington, will retire Feb. 3 after 15 years at the post. In his position, he was responsible for credit and noncredit programming, on-site business and industry training, and youth activities. Working the field of higher education for more than 30 years, Orris joined the campus community in 1997 after serving at Point Park University, Seton Hill University, and Westmoreland County Community College. Under his leadership, the continuing education offerings expanded to include the Organizational Leadership program that began in 2005 and the MBA program that begins in the fall.

Philip Mohr, affiliate professor of microbiology, retires

Philip Mohr, a Penn State affiliate professor of microbiology and director of undergraduate programs in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, has retired after 35 years of service to Penn State. He joined Penn State in 1976 as a lecturer in microbiology, became an affiliate assistant professor in 1982, was promoted to affiliate associate professor in 1990, and was promoted to affiliate professor in 1998.

Budget officer Curley to retire after 41 years at Penn State

He knows it sounds cliche, but after more than four decades working at Penn State, University Budget Officer Steve Curley is certain that it's the people he will miss most when he retires at the end of December. "Everybody says that, but that's what it's going to be," Curley said. "We have an outstanding staff here in the budget office, and it has been a pleasure to work with them. We also have a very good senior leadership team, deans and chancellors whom I've had a chance to work with over a long period of time." Curley will leave Penn State after 41 years, having first joined the staff of the controller's office in 1970, shortly after graduating from the University with a degree in business administration. In 2006, Curley was appointed university budget officer, where he has overseen a staff responsible for developing, implementing and controlling Penn State's annual operating budget, with an office including sections for budget, information resources and network services.

Schobert retires from EMS after a quarter of a century of service

Harold Schobert, professor of fuel science in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and leading researcher in fuel chemistry in the EMS Energy Institute, has retired from Penn State after 25 years. His retirement was effective on June 30.
