Energy a focus at Penn State's Ag Progress Days

Energy -- be it solar, wind, biofuels from plants or natural gas extracted from the Marcellus Shale -- again will be a focus at Ag Progress Days, Aug. 14-16.

New this year is the Renewable Energy Showcase, a series of presentations on energy resources and conservation practices, to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the Learning Center Tent at Main and East 9th streets (below the Pasto Museum).

Microbes that convert electricity into methane gas could become an important source of renewable energy, according to scientists from Stanford and Penn State universities.

Researchers at both universities are raising colonies of microorganisms -- methanogens -- with the remarkable ability to turn electrical energy into pure methane, the key ingredient in natural gas

A 70-foot-tall wind turbine was installed Friday, July 22, at Penn State's nine-acre Sustainability Experience Center. Serving as both a source of clean, renewable energy and a research tool, the turbine is being funded by a Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA) grant awarded to Penn State's Center for Sustainability in 2007 for development of the Hybrid Residential Energy Systems (HyRES) Laboratory. In addition to providing renewable energy generation for the laboratory, the turbine will be used as an educational tool in the Pennsylvania Wind for Schools program. Similar wind turbine systems are planned for installation at 10 to 15 schools across the state over the next three years as a part of the program.

Penn State recognized as national leader in green power use

For the fourth year in a row, Penn State leads the Big Ten and ranks third in the nation among colleges and universities in the amount of green power it uses, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Challenge. Green power sources avoid environmental impacts and produce no human-caused greenhouse gases. At present, Penn State purchases almost 84 million kilowatt hours of green power -- about 20 percent of the electricity the University consumes -- generated by biomass, small hydroelectric sources and wind.

New two-year degree at Penn College focuses on renewable energy

Beginning this fall, Pennsylvania College of Technology will offer an associate degree in renewable energy technologies that will enable students to develop the practical skills to install, troubleshoot and maintain photovoltaic, wind-turbine and solar-thermal systems. Students already are getting a look at renewable energy through installation of photovoltaic panels on the college's main campus.

Renewable energy has become a hot topic now that the world's population is increasing and fossil fuels are declining. More now than ever before, we are talking about alternative sources of energy - with wind, solar and hydrogen options available. That's the focus of Penn State President Graham Spanier's upcoming edition of "To The Best Of My Knowledge." The live call-in program airs at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 16) on WPSU-TV and WPSU-FM. It also airs on the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN).

Penn State program aims to help farmers cut costs, increase revenue

Rising costs for fuel, fertilizers and other agricultural supplies are leading farmers to rethink their energy choices. To help them assess their energy options, the Lancaster County Center of Excellence in Production Agriculture is offering Energy on the Farm, a one-day seminar for Lancaster County and Capital and Northeast Regions farmers, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center. The seminar will provide participants with basic information about alternative and renewable energy and ways to reduce costs and generate revenue.

Penn State program to explore opportunities, challenges of wind energy

Wind energy is becoming an important source of power for America's homes and businesses and a potential driver of economic development. Pennsylvania Wind Energy Symposium: Power for the Future, to be held Nov. 17 and 18 at The Penn Stater Conference Center, will give community groups, elected officials, business representatives, researchers and other interested parties a chance to learn more about wind energy and its capability to power the state.

Bus shelter transformed into interactive exhibit at Penn State Berks

When students wait for the BARTA bus at Penn State Berks, they will enjoy an interactive experience of sight and sound during their stay. Faculty and staff at the college recently collaborated on a special project, combining the arts and engineering to create an interactive exhibit titled "Knowledge Is Power" in the bus shelter, located in front of the Franco Building.
