Charity golf tournament to benefit wounded warriors

The inaugural Nittany Lions/SEAL Legacy Foundation Golf Classic, which will be held at noon on Friday, Sept. 14, at the Toftrees Country Club in State College, Pa., is currently seeking golfers to participate on 27 teams. Each team will be hosted by a letterman from the Penn State football team, a letterman from the U.S. Naval Academy or a wounded veteran. Tournament organizers -- which also include Ruth Ann Jackson, instructor in the School of Hospitality Management, and Patricia Kleban, senior instructor in recreation, park and tourism management -- also are seeking sponsors to help support the teams.

Chairmen of the tournament include Bill O'Brien, head football coach at Penn State; Ken Niumatalolo, head football coach at the United States Naval Academy; Gerald Fussell, retired colonel of the United States Marine Corps; and Ryan McCombie, retired captain of the United States Navy SEALs and newly-elected member of the Penn State Board of Trustees.

Americans fall short of federal exercise recommendations

Americans spend, on average, only about two hours each week participating in sports and fitness activities, according to researchers at Penn State and the University of Maryland who examined U.S. government data from the American Time Use Study.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults aged 18 to 64 get about four hours of physical activity each week by exercising moderately for 2.5 hours per week and engaging in a vigorous activity, such as running and muscle strengthening, for an hour and fifteen minutes per week.

Penn State faculty co-author major recreation research papers

Penn State faculty members co-authored two of five important papers commissioned by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), which were released at the end of October. The goal of the papers is to help park and recreation agencies across the nation better align their services with the key challenges faced in their communities to encourage active, healthy living.

Golf management students visit golf's birthplace for spring break

The words "cold" and "rainy" don't describe most students' ideal spring break destination -- unless students are interested in golf management. Scotland is known for its cloudy skies but, more importantly, it is where golf originated, so it provides a unique historical outlook on the sport.

Twenty-two Penn State students in the Professional Golf Management (PGM) option of the Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management degree program spent their spring break in St. Andrews, Scotland, where they had the chance to play on some of the oldest golf courses in the world, meet with head golf pros and see different operation styles, and learn about the golf's history.

Doors swing open on new golf teaching and research lab

Outdoor recreation plan builds on professors' research

Called upon by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, faculty in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Management and other departments at Penn State coordinated a number of surveys, discussion groups and analyses that informed a federally mandated plan to increase and improve outdoor recreation opportunities across the state.

Professor appointed president of Academy of Leisure Sciences

Dr. Linda Caldwell, professor of recreation, park and tourism management, was elected president of the Academy of Leisure Sciences, effective October 14, 2009. The academy comprises nearly 100 elected members who have made major contributions to the study of leisure sciences. The mission of the Academy of Leisure Sciences is to advance the field of leisure studies through three main activities: recognizing outstanding scholars, creating forums for exchanging knowledge and ideas, and promoting the study through scholars programs.

Awards ceremony will honor HHD faculty and staff

The College of Health and Human Development will honor seven of its faculty and staff members at a ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Lisa Grove, Sharon "Chickie" Krimmel, Chalandra Bryant, Gary Fosmire, Robert Turrisi, Linda Caldwell, and A. Catharine Ross will be receiving awards. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

Summer camps provide fun and exercise for children

When school's not in session, it can be difficult to find ways to keep kids off of the couch. Summer camps, however, prove to be a much healthier alternative to TV. Not only do summer camps provide fun, engaging activities for kids, but kids at summer camps meet or exceed the amount of daily physical activity recommended by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Faculty and alumna contribute to first National Physical Activity Plan

Two members of the Penn State faculty and one alumna have been selected to assist with the development of the first U.S. National Physical Activity Plan. Andrew J. Mowen, associate professor of recreation, park, and tourism management (RPTM); Birgitta Baker, assistant professor of kinesiology at Louisiana State University and graduate of the RPTM doctoral program; and Allison Topper, senior instructor in public health sciences and pediatrics in the Penn State College of Medicine, will provide background research that will inform the plan.

The recommendations of Mowen and Baker were debated and discussed during the National Physical Activity Plan Conference on July 1 and 2.
