High school students attended annual Communications Day

On Tuesday, April 3, more than 130 students from six area high schools attended Penn State Beaver's seventh annual Communications Day, which featured a theme of "A World Away. A Message Apart." The event was designed, organized and implemented by students in the Introduction to Public Relations and the Public Relations Methods courses taught by Juliette Storr, associate professor of communications.

Analysis: Companies' PR plans should include Wikipedia

Many major corporations have embraced social media tools such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as part of their overall public relations plans, and a Penn State faculty member and her colleague believe Wikipedia should be monitored as part of those efforts as well. Because Wikipedia allows online content to be edited by anyone (not exclusively controlled by the company as is the case with other social media sites), the faculty members who conducted the analysis of pages for 10 of the most visible corporations in the United States over the past four years believe that Wikipedia can provide an important barometer of public opinion for companies.

Advertising/Public Relations Alumni Network elects eight board members

Eight new board members from major companies such as The Ad Council, Baltimore Orioles and CBS Radio were elected to serve on the Penn State Advertising/Public Relations Alumni Network Group, affiliated with the Penn State College of Communications. The board members will represent more than 9,000 Penn State graduates with degrees in advertising and public relations and/or professional experience in those fields. The Alumni Program Group (APG) sponsors programs, mentors students and provides networking opportunities for current students and alumni in the college.

Penn State students working to get peers counted for census

Five Penn State students are heading a promotional and informational campaign to get every person in Centre County counted for the 2010 Census, with a special focus on rural and college student populations -- two groups with traditionally low return rates. Count Centre County is teaming with area establishments to host informational events throughout February. The group will have a table from 1:30-4 p.m. on Feb. 5 outside the North Atherton Street Wal-Mart; tables in the HUB-Robeson Center and University Park residence halls; guest speaker Richard Buck, Census 2010 Partnership Specialist, at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the State Theatre; and a trivia night on Feb. 24 at Rotelli, 250 E. Calder Way, State College.
