Penn State alumni and the public are invited to attend "Urban Sustainability and Regenerative Design" from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 21, at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Pittsburgh. The event is part of the Penn State Alumni Association's City Lights programming and is co-sponsored by the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture.

Penn State partnership aims to reduce flooding in Pittsburgh area

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 95 building along with homes on Saline and Alexis Streets in Pittsburgh's Four Mile Run area will have lessened street and basement flooding thanks to a collaborative partnership with the Penn State Center: Engaging Pittsburgh, the City of Pittsburgh, Local 95 and community members. Leaders today (July 20) gathered to officially cut the ribbon on a storm water mitigation project that may serve as an example for other flood prone areas.

Strategic plan's outreach goal encourages public sustainability

Penn State's University Sustainability Council is drafting the University's first strategic plan for sustainability. The council is seeking public input for the five-goal plan during the drafting process. The fifth and final goal of Penn State's Strategic Plan for Sustainability aims to help people throughout Pennsylvania and the world to develop and embrace more sustainable environmental, economic and social systems. "Serving the Commonwealth and engaging with its citizens is fundamental to Penn State's land-grant mission. Our many partnerships with communities in Pennsylvania -- and beyond -- put us in an extraordinary position to help develop innovative solutions to sustainability challenges," said Susannah Barsom, associate director of the Center for Sustainability.

Professor named regional winner for 'Regenerative Design' project

Ken Tamminga, professor of landscape architecture in the College of Arts and Architecture, and the Pittsburgh Studio initiative, have been recognized as the northeast regional winner of the 2011 Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and the National Outreach Scholarship Conference. Tamminga has been encouraging fourth and fifth year landscape architecture students to help stressed neighborhoods in Pittsburgh recapture community pride.

Spring break bus schedules offer service to big cities
