Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital again ranked as one of nation's best

Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital has been ranked in five specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. Children’s Hospital ranked in cancer, urology, orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery, and cardiology and heart surgery -- two more specialties than last year.

Educational session at Children’s Hospital to focus on water safety

Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital is offering monthly educational sessions open to the community. Each month’s session will focus on a different topic and be presented by Children’s Hospital registered nurses and health educators. The first session, on the topic of “Water Safety,” is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on June 12, in the Family Resource Center at the Children's Hospital.

The Medical Minute: Promoting a 'smart' approach to antibiotic use

Antibiotics are used to treat a wide range of illnesses -- including some they're not equipped to fight. The unnecessary prescriptions are often a result of undue pressures placed on parents and physicians. An effort is under way to increase awareness about the appropriate use of antibiotics.

Santa makes cyber-visit to Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital

Santa Claus took time out of his busy schedule to talk with patients at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital this week. The hospital's Child Life Program and Cisco Systems arranged for the connection between the North Pole and the hospital's playroom. The children had the opportunity to share their wish lists with Old St. Nick via a video monitor and Web-enabled camera.

Through the use of iPads, Santa also made virtual bedside visits with children who don't feel well enough to leave their rooms.

In all, 30 hospitals nationwide - including three in Pennsylvania - took part in Cisco's Santa Connection program this year. Santa's first cyber-visit to Penn State Hershey occurred last year.

Aflac Holiday Ducks benefit Children's Hospital

Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital is a first-time partner of Aflac Holiday Duck fundraising program this year. Aflac and Macy's have teamed up for the 12th year to produce and sell the Aflac Holiday Duck with all net proceeds going to support research and treatment for childhood cancer. Sales of Aflac Holiday Ducks at central Pennsylvania Macy's locations will support pediatric cancer research and treatment at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.

The X's Pay for Play to help Hershey Children's Hospital

From 5 a.m. Nov. 15 through 9 a.m. Nov. 16, WQXA-FM 105.7 The X personalities Nipsey, Earl David Reed and Jen Shade of "The People's Morning Show" will host the 28-hour marathon Pay for Play broadcast. Listeners are invited to make a donation to Children's Miracle Network to hear their song requests played on the air. The further the request is from the station's rock 'n' roll format, the higher the donation must be. Money raised will support the Child Life program at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.

Kohl's, Penn State Hershey team up to fight childhood obesity

The Kohl's Healthy Choices for Healthy Families program at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital has kicked off its 2012 nutrition and physical activity awareness campaign. To help fuel the effort, a representative of Kohl's stores across central Pennsylvania presented the children's hospital with a check for $216,250.

Halloween can be scary when the children of your neighborhood transform into ghouls and goblins, princesses and witches for trick-or-treat fun. But nothing sends a chill down a parent's spine like the realization that trick-or-treat could turn into a tragedy. Susan Rzucidlo, pediatric trauma program manager at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital and coordinator of Safe Kids Dauphin County, has advice for a safe Halloween.

This summer, the Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital joined We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition) as a registered We Can! community site. We Can! is a science-based, National Institutes of Health (NIH) movement that teaches parents, caregivers, kids and communities ways to eat healthier, increase physical activity and limit screen time to help children ages 8-13 maintain a healthy weight.

In a mock trial at Penn State Law held on April 2 with pediatric medical residents and law students the case hinged on the word "because."

Children's Hospital specialty outpatient services have new home

Lancaster County families now have even greater access to specialty pediatric care close to home with the opening of the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital -- Lancaster Outpatient practice site. The new practice site, at 2170 Noll Drive, Lancaster, off Rohrerstown Road near Stauffer's of Kissel Hill, provides easy access to a full array of specialty services for children and adolescents in one convenient location.
