Lady Lions visit Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute

The Penn State Lady Lions basketball team made its first-ever trip to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, specifically to Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. Members of the media tagged along as team members toured the facility Jan. 2 and interacted with patients and staff. There's a strong connection between the team and Penn State Hershey - as the Lady Lions donate a portion of the proceeds from their annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone game to breast cancer research efforts at the Cancer Institute.

Coach Coquese Washington and members of her team toured a research lab in the Cancer Institute, where they were able to see and hear how the Pink Zone money directly supports breast cancer research efforts. Then it was off to the infusion therapy clinic where they met with patients, physicians, nurses and others. The team also visited the Medical Center's inpatient cancer unit.

At 1 p.m. Feb. 24, the Penn State Lady Lions Basketball Team will take on Michigan for the team's seventh annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone.

For the past six years, WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State has raised $565,317.73 for breast cancer awareness, research and patient support. Following the 2012 game, Pennsylvania Pink Zone donated $52,780 to Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute to support breast cancer research.

The Penn State Lady Lions launched their annual WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State online auctions, and for the first time will sponsor two Internet fundraisers to boost donations for breast cancer causes. The auctions feature autographed memorabilia and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, including a Saturday Night Live package and a deluxe football weekend for the Penn State vs. Alabama game.

Melanoma is the leading cause of death from skin disease - and its rate of occurrence is steadily increasing. In an attempt to fight this trend, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center today announced the formation of the Penn State Hershey Melanoma Center.

Lady Lions and Fullington to offer survivors free bus service for game

The Penn State Lady Lions and Fullington Trailways will provide free bus service for breast cancer survivors for the 2011 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State game, to take place at noon on Sunday, Feb. 27, vs. Northwestern at the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Fullington Trailways, Susquehanna Trailways and Martz Trailways will provide service to the Pink Zone at Penn State from 13 Pennsylvania cities, including Harrisburg and Hershey.

Hershey Bears, local restaurant team up to raise cancer research funds

The wives and girlfriends of members of the Hershey Bears hockey team, in partnership with local restaurant What If, of Hershey, will host a dinner and auction on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Money raised will benefit new research projects with the goal of finding treatments and cures for several forms of cancer at Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. Hershey Bears players will be on-hand during the auction to meet guests, sign autographs, and take photographs. Dinner guests will have the pleasure of having their own Hershey Bears players as table hosts.

Cancer Institute supports Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute supported the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania by participating in the Adopt a Lodge program in October. Although many advances have been made in the treatment of cancer, the cost of hotel stays and mileage to and from the facilities that offer the best options for care can be a serious financial burden. The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge provides patients and their caregivers a "home away from home" when they must travel 40 miles or more to receive treatment for their disease. The Cancer Institute derives great benefit for its patients in having such an excellent facility as a neighbor.

The Penn State Lady Lions basketball team 2010 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State fundraising campaign raised more than $80,000 for Pink Zone charities, including Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. The Lady Lions' donation will fund the Penn State Lady Lion Basketball Endowment -- an endowment that will provide grants for novel ideas in breast cancer research. Since Pink Zone began four years ago, the Lady Lions have raised more than $165,000 for breast cancer awareness.

Cycling group to join national Spokes for Hope cancer awareness effort

At 1 p.m. on Sept. 12, Cyclists Combating Cancer, a cancer survivor and advocate group, will start the Hershey "spoke" at the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute as part of a national ride called Spokes of Hope. The ride, which spans from California to Washington, D.C., is designed to educate the community and legislators about cancer, cancer resources and cancer survivorship. The local team is led by Cancer Institute patient and 11-year cancer survivor Sharon Duncan. Cancer Institute researchers seek men for prostate study

One in six men is at risk of getting prostate cancer in their lifetime. Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute researchers are trying to determine if selenium yeast and selenomethionine lower prostate-specific antigen levels and prevent other markers related to prostate cancer development in healthy individuals of different age groups. Selenium is a mineral and is known to protect against cancer in laboratory animal models.

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center today unveiled an historical marker to recognize the seminal work of the late Drs. Mary K. Howett and John W. Kreider and their research colleagues in helping to establish the link between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer.
