University Registrar Karen Schultz to retire June 30

University Registrar Karen Schultz will retire June 30, after nearly 33 years as a Penn State employee and six and a half in her current position.

Looking back over her years as Registrar, Schultz has primarily viewed herself as a champion for the students at Penn State. "My focus has been on reaching out to students, being an advocate for students," she said. "I have tried to bring a student's perspective to policy creation, and to bring to light how our policies and procedures impact our students."

After 35 years as a University employee and 27 years in the Office of the Board of Trustees, the last 21 as its director, Paula Ammerman oversaw her last Board of Trustees meeting Friday (May 3) in advance of a June 30 retirement.

His research interests involve abstract algebra, such as finite fields and polynomials. His teaching interest involves basic math, such as number theory and vector calculus. Since 1986, Javier Gomez-Calderon, professor of mathematics at Penn State New Kensington, has introduced generations of campus students to the wonders of trigonometry, calculus, matrices and number theory. A finite number class is appropriate this semester as Gomez-Calderon’s number is 27 – that is, years at the campus before he retires in June after teaching a final summer class.

Fran Ganter to retire after 46 years with Penn State football program

After nearly five decades as a Penn State Football student-athlete, coach and administrator, Fran Ganter has announced his retirement, effective Feb. 28.

A running back for the Nittany Lions from 1967-70, Ganter helped Penn State compile a 29-3 record, including undefeated seasons capped by Orange Bowl wins in 1968 and ’69, as a player. Winner of the squad’s Red Worrell Award in 1970, Ganter graduated in 1971 and assumed duties as the freshman coach the next fall, beginning a tenure on the coaching staff that would last 33 years. Ganter was named offensive coordinator in 1984 and assistant head coach in 2000, leaving the sidelines in 2004 to serve as associate athletic director for football administration.

Community celebrates McDonald's career, endowment tops $100K

More than 200 people turned out to celebrate the career and accomplishments of Chancellor Anita McDonald during her recent retirement celebration at the DuBois Country Club. Guests included friends, family members who traveled from Arizona, Colorado, Washington D.C. and Michigan, members of the business community, government leaders, members of Penn State University leadership, and Penn State DuBois faculty, staff and students. All wished McDonald well in her upcoming retirement, which will begin Jan. 1.

Litzenberger retires after nearly 40 years of service

After nearly 40 years of service to Penn State Lehigh Valley's Office of Continuing Education, Sandra M. "Sandy" Litzenberger retired in October 2012. In September 1973, Litzenberger began her Penn State career working part time in the then Penn State Allentown Ridge Avenue facility in Continuing Education (CE) processing bulk mailings and assisting in the registration office. She became a full-time secretary in 1974 in the CE office and was involved in all aspects of continuing education including registration, filing, typing and working with students and faculty, assisting in setting up undergraduate and graduate evening and summer program credit courses, noncredit activities, and management development programs.

Mont Alto Chancellor Gnage announces retirement

After a distinguished and long career in higher education, Penn State Mont Alto Chancellor David C. Gnage has announced that he will retire at the end of this academic year.

Gnage was appointed chancellor of the campus in January 2002. Under his leadership, Penn State Mont Alto has increased degree options, including the baccalaureate in information sciences and technology with the securities and risk analysis minor, which prepares students for careers within the information technology-intensive global context that defines the new "Information Age"; and the baccalaureate in letters, arts and sciences, a multi-disciplinary, theme-oriented, student-designed major that enables students to prepare for a wide range of careers.

Former architectural engineering head Behr to retire

Rich Behr, Charles and Elinor Matts Professor of Architectural Engineering, will retire from Penn State on Nov. 1. Behr will pursue a position as dean of the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Penn State Abington's Bob Barton retires after 38 years

The joyful noise - the jokes, shouts and general commotion that comprise the soundtrack of Penn State Abington - has dropped a few notches in volume. The raucous laugh is gone, retired along with its owner after echoing around the campus for portions of six decades.
Bob Barton, senior instructor of kinesiology, called it a career at the end of the spring semester, leaving behind indelible traces of the infectious optimism that he first brought to Abington as a student in the late 1960s.

After 33 years of inscribing classroom blackboards with derivatives, secants, integrals and infinitesimals, David Wells, associate professor of mathematics at Penn State New Kensington, is turning in his chalk. He is set to retire at the end of the spring semester.

Penn State DuBois Chancellor Anita McDonald announces retirement

After a long and distinguished career in higher education, Penn State DuBois Chancellor Anita McDonald has announced that she will retire at the end of this calendar year. Under McDonald's leadership, DuBois campus has seen increased degree offerings, has raised more than $10 million to support student scholarships and facilities improvements, has seen the creation of services to assist entrepreneurs, and more.

"My focus has always been on student success," McDonald said. "A large part of that is engaging students with their community, and taking advantage of partnerships within the community."

Simons to take new position at Dartmouth College and Medical School

Effective June 1, Richard J. Simons, vice dean for educational affairs, will be leaving Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine to assume the role of associate vice president for health affairs at Dartmouth College and senior associate dean for medical education at Dartmouth Medical School. A focus of his efforts will be to direct a new Center for Learning and Innovation in Medical Education for Dartmouth Medical School. Simons, 1981 Penn State graduate in the College of Communications, has been a member of the Penn State Hershey faculty for almost 28 years and served as vice dean for the past seven years.

Ross retires from Penn State Harrisburg's School of Humanities

Cheri L. Ross has retired as associate professor emerita of English and humanities from Penn State Harrisburg's School of Humanities. Ross came to the campus in 1995 after teaching for three years at Penn State Mont Alto. She received her doctorate in English from Purdue University.
