Penn State's veteran students eligible for priority registration for spring 2014

Veterans who have been honorably discharged from all branches of the U.S. military will be eligible to sign up for priority registration for Penn State classes beginning this September for Spring Semester 2014. Once the system is in place, qualifying students need only fill out and return a form to receive priority registration.

World Campus military and veteran student enrollment continues to rise

The flexibility of online education is ideal for many adults who want to learn when and where it's convenient to them, and especially beneficial to active-duty military service members deployed in a war zone or where Internet access is limited. Since Penn State's World Campus launched 15 years ago, enrollment by active-duty military service members and veterans has grown steadily -- and more than 120 percent in the last four years.

Penn State has signed the new U.S. Department of Defense Voluntary Education Partnership agreement, which re-authorizes the University -- through all campuses and learning centers -- to provide higher education opportunities to active-duty military service members, veterans and family members who use military tuition assistance programs.

Best practices programs aid faculty and staff working with veterans

More than 3,100 veteran and active-duty military students are using their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to earn degrees at Penn State as of spring 2011, a 21 percent increase over last year. As more troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, this enrollment trend is likely to continue. To help faculty and staff who work with these students better understand and support their needs, a University-wide team has created five Best Practices in the Recruitment and Retention of Student Veterans programs.

As more of America's veterans start using their G.I. Bill benefits at Penn State, the need to best support them intensifies as well. To ensure that Penn State employs best practices in dealing with the unique challenges veteran students and active-duty military encounter in their quest for college degrees, a series of five free webinars, developed in collaboration with Penn State's Human Resource Development Center, is being offered this year.

The nation thanks its veterans today (Nov. 11), and at Penn State, students and University programs have a long history of supporting military service in the United States. Approximately 830 Penn State students have gone to active duty since Sept. 11, 2001, according to data from the University registrar. Today, more than 2,000 student veterans are enrolled University-wide at Penn State.

Scholarship endowed to help veterans, dependents in need

Nearly 300 Penn State alumni and friends, most of them military veterans, have contributed approximately $51,000 to endow a scholarship that will assist veterans or dependents of veterans at the University who have a demonstrated financial need and have achieved superior academic records. Graduate or undergraduate students in any degree program at any Penn State location are eligible for the Veterans Special Needs Endowed Scholarship, which will be awarded for the first time in the spring 2009 semester.
