Penn State to offer nursing forensics certificate online

Violence by intimate partners is a major public health problem in the United States. One in four women and one in seven men have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When victims arrive in the emergency room, it is crucial to have a forensic nurse available to collect and preserve evidence that may be needed for a legal case. Penn State’s new Nursing Forensics Certificate, delivered online through the World Campus, is designed to enable registered nurses to conveniently prepare for this growing nursing specialty.

Kolanowski receives grant for nursing home project

Dr. Ann Kolanowski, Elouise Ross Eberly Professor in the School of Nursing and director of the John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Penn State, is one of two project directors for a project titled "Toolbox for Improving Behavioral Health in Nursing Homes," recently funded by a $15,000 grant from The Commonwealth Fund in New York City.

Ann Kolanowski, Elouise Ross Eberly Professor of Nursing and director of the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Penn State, received the 2012 Doris Schwartz Gerontological Nursing Research Award from the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) at their 65th Annual Scientific Meeting Nov. 14-18 in San Diego.

Two Penn State Hershey nurses will be recognized and honored as finalists at the annual Nightingale Awards Gala on Oct. 26 in Harrisburg. The finalists from Penn State Hershey are Patti Hart, director of nursing, Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital and Women's Health; and Elizabeth Yaw Bates, instructor, Penn State School of Nursing.

Hupcey, Loeb inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing

Two School of Nursing faculty members have been named Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). Judith Hupcey, associate dean for graduate education, and Susan Loeb, associate professor, were inducted into the academy along with 173 other nurse leaders at the AAN's annual awards ceremony Oct. 13, in Washington, D.C.

Mastrian receives Novosel award for distinguished nursing alumni

Kathleen Mastrian, associate professor of nursing and coordinator of the Nursing program at Penn State Shenango, received the 2012 Shirley Novosel Distinguished Nursing Alumni Award, presented by the Penn State Nursing Alumni Society, at the School of Nursing's second annual Homecoming brunch on Oct. 7. Mastrian is a leader and expert in nursing informatics, a discipline on the cutting edge of nursing science. The second edition of her book "Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge" was published this year by Jones and Bartlett and is used in more than 150 nursing schools and 350 nursing courses worldwide. She is also senior managing editor of the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics.

Patient safety improves when leaders walk the safety talk

When nurses feel safe admitting to their supervisors that they've made a mistake regarding a patient, they are more likely to report the error, which ultimately leads to a stronger commitment to safe practices and a reduction in the error rate, according to an international team of researchers including Deirdre McCaughey, assistant professor of health policy and administration at Penn State. In addition, when nurse leaders' safety actions mirror their spoken words -- when they practice what they preach -- unit nurses do not feel caught between adhering to safety protocols and speaking up about mistakes against protocols.

Nurses examine caregiver grief

Family members who care for terminally ill patients at home can be helped by nurses throughout the course of the illness and particularly after the patient's death, according to Penn State nursing researchers. "What we know is that the caregiver's primary contact with the health care system is during brief office visits (for the patient)," said Janice L. Penrod, professor of nursing and director of the Center for Nursing Research. "Our goal is to develop an assessment that is fast and efficient to give us a snapshot of that caregiver so that we can at least identify needs, and if not intervene during that brief office visit, give them information and a referral to help them smooth the course."

Student nurses 'Step Out' against diabetes in local fundraising walk

The Penn State Worthington Scranton Student Nursing Association (SNA) will be participating in this year's annual diabetes "Step Out Walk" and are looking for individuals to join their team, as well as donations. This year's walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 28 in downtown Scranton.

Penn State launches Accelerated RN to B.S. in Nursing at four sites

In 2010, the Institute of Medicine recommended 80 percent of the nursing workforce hold at least a bachelor's degree by 2020 to meet the demands of an ever-changing health care system. To help Pennsylvania nurses achieve this education goal, Penn State is offering an Accelerated RN to B.S. in Nursing program at four locations this fall: Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus; Penn State Greater Allegheny; Penn State DuBois; and Penn State Learning Center in Lewistown.
