Penn State team to compete in NASA student launch project

A team of students representing Penn State will compete April 17-21 in Alabama at the NASA University Student Launch Initiative (USLI). The USLI is an annual event that challenges teams of young engineers and scientists to design, test and build large, high-powered rockets, capable of flying to the target altitude of one mile.

Obama to honor mechanical engineering's Thole as 'Champion of Change'

Karen A. Thole, department head in mechanical and nuclear engineering at Penn State, will be highlighted by the White House Champions of Change program Friday, Dec. 9, in Washington, D.C., for her work in helping to recruit and retain women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The event will be broadcast live at www.whitehouse.gov/live at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Thole will be recognized along with 11 other Champions, including teachers, industry leaders, students and nonprofit leaders who have each taken great strides to reduce the barriers that drive many girls and women to turn away from high-paying, highly rewarding careers as the nation's top innovators.

$2.6 million DOE contract creates nuclear security education program

Penn State has received a $2.6 million contract from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to create a nuclear security education program. "Acquisition of nuclear and radioactive materials for use in weapons of mass destruction and other acts of terrorism is one of the major threats to global security. The DOE and other federal agencies wanted to know how to prevent nuclear terrorism," explained Kenan Unlu, director of Penn State's Radiation Science and Engineering Center, professor of nuclear engineering and the grant's principal investigator.

Students present research at Westinghouse as part of summer program

Ten students from across the country, including two Penn Staters -- Nate Michaluk, a dual-major in mechanical and nuclear engineering, and Michael Melnyk, a mechanical engineering major, -- presented research reports earlier this month to executives at Westinghouse headquarters in Cranberry Township, Pa.
