Hazleton professor studies how relationships make us better

Assistant Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences Daniel Hans Mansson spoke Swedish into his office computer at Penn State Hazleton. From their native country, his mother answered. Maintaining relationships is a specialty of Mansson, not just with his mother but also in his research.

Mansson often studies traits and relational characteristics that solidify relationships, whether between students and teachers;, grandparents and grandchildren, friends on Facebook, or mentors and proteges.

People receive affection in many relationships. In subtle ways relationships also help people do better in school, bolster their mental health and even their physiological well-being, as Mansson explained recently -- in person and in print.

Hazleton financial aid workshop rescheduled to Feb. 4

The financial aid workshop by Penn State Hazleton's Office of Student Aid scheduled for Monday, Jan. 28, has been postponed due to inclement weather. The workshop will now be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in Room 115 of the Evelyn Graham Academic Building on the campus. This free session is open to parents and students planning to attend any college or university.

Hazleton THON to hold bag bingo fundraiser

Penn State Hazleton THON will host a Coach bag bingo fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 3, in the Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium in the physical education building. More than 20 different Coach bags, wallets, wristlets and purses will be given away as prizes during the event. Cost for the event is $25.

All proceeds benefit the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, THON for short, the world's largest student-run philanthropy, which raises money for the fight against pediatric cancer at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. Last year, Penn State students raised more than $9.5 million.

Alumnus receives $5M to develop groundbreaking HIV/heroin vaccine

A Penn State alumnus who attended both Penn State Hazleton and University Park, has won an award that will pay him $5 million to research his proposal to develop a vaccine against HIV that also prevents heroin addiction.

Gary R. Matyas, a 1978 Penn State graduate in biophysics, captured the 2012 Avant-Garde Award for Medications Development from the National Institute on Drug Abuse with his plan to attack twin scourges.

"There is a strong correlation between heroin abuse and HIV infection, especially in developing countries," Matyas said of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus that causes AIDS. "The possibility of creating a combination heroin/HIV vaccine provides an important opportunity to address both a unique treatment for heroin abuse as well as continuing the quest to develop an effective preventive HIV vaccine."

Japanese performers coming to Penn State Hazleton on Jan. 23

Penn State Hazleton's Cultural Events Series continues as Taikoza, a group performing on a variety of Japanese instruments, takes the stage at 7 p.m. Jan. 23, in the Slusser/Bayzick Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Each and every Taikoza performance has one common theme: unique instruments combining for an original (and unforgettable) sound. The featured instrument is the taiko, a large, barrel-like drum that can fill the air with the sounds of rolling thunder. Taikoza uses taikos of various sizes, ranging from 2 to 6 feet, and weighing as much as 170 pounds.

Penn State Worthington Scranton recently honored 14 employees for landmark years of service during the campus' annual Staff Service Awards and Welcome Back luncheon Jan. 4.

All campus staff and employees were invited to the event and those employees celebrating milestone anniversaries were honored for their years of service to the Worthington Scranton community. Mary-Beth Krogh-Jespersen, chancellor, presented the awards.

Worthington Scranton Alumni Society names Alumnus of the Year

Michael Narcavage, manager of corporate development for Chesapeake Energy, has been selected as the Penn State Worthington Scranton Alumni Society's Alumnus of the Year for 2012.

A 1995 graduate of Penn State with a bachelor's degree in administration of justice, he has been active with Penn State Worthington Scranton as a member of the Alumni Society, the Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter, and as a member of the campus' Advisory Board and several of its committees.

He is also a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association and a member of the Nittany Lion Club.

Marcos family establishes IST program endowment

Frank and Denise Marcos, parents of Penn State Worthington Scranton graduate Michael Marcos, 2010 information sciences and technology (IST), have established the Marcos Family Program Endowment in Information Sciences and Technology at the campus.

This newly endowed fund will enhance the academic and educational environment for students within the IST discipline by helping to fund support of the IST Scholars' Series and other visiting speakers; mentoring activities; special projects and programs; and faculty and student involvement.

Faculty who use newspapers in classroom can get free subscriptions

Faculty who include newspaper readership as part of their required coursework can receive a daily subscription of that paper at no cost -- as well online classroom resources, case studies and additional teaching support materials made available by The New York Times and USA Today -- as part of the Penn State Student Newspaper Readership Program. Faculty interested in receiving the free newspapers for use in their classrooms should email the Penn State Student Newspaper Readership Program at newspapers@psu.edu and provide their contact information, office address and a copy of the course syllabus requiring student newspaper readership as an email attachment.

Second annual Penn State Worthington Scranton Zumba-THON a success

The second annual Zumba-THON at Penn State Worthington Scranton (PSWS), sponsored by the PSWS Alumni Society and the campus' Blue and White Society, was a great success, beating last year's totals for attendance and fundraising.

More than 100 dancers participated in the event, which took place Nov. 28 in the campus gymnasium. Local Zumba instructors volunteered their time and skills to lead the dancers during the two-hour event, which raised more than $1,200. Last year's event had about 100 participants and $1,000 was raised.

Participants paid a $5 donation at the door, with all the proceeds going to THON. Campus groups and local businesses also donated a variety of items, which were raffled off during the event.

Russell Casey, assistant professor of marketing at Penn State Worthington Scranton, has co-authored a paper for the International Journal of Integrated Marketing Communications. Titled "Brand Consistency in Social Media: WVU's Eberly College Works Toward a Conceptual Framework of Integrated Marketing Communications," Casey and his co-author, Lauren Peretti, stipulate that as social media use has skyrocketed, many colleges and universities are adding social media to their marketing strategies. The problem with social media, according to their research, is that many traditional marketers lack the experience in social media venues such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Alumnus shares experiences with business, engineering students

Students in the business, engineering and marketing degree programs at Penn State Worthington Scranton had a unique opportunity to gain industry knowledge and insight, as well as networking experience, when campus and University alumnus Robert Beard visited to speak about his college, professional and life experiences. Beard, a native of Carbondale, Pa., is president and CEO of UGI Utilities and also serves as a member of the utilities' board of directors. During his time at UGI Utilities, he also served as vice president of the southern region and vice president of marketing, rates and supply. He joined UGI through the acquisition of PPL Gas Utilities in October, 2008. While at PPL, Mr. Beard held a number of senior leadership positions and was Vice President - Operations and Engineering at the time of the acquisition.

Justina Ferguson hired as nursing instructor at PSWS

Mary-Beth Krogh-Jespersen, chancellor of Penn State Worthington Scranton, is pleased to announce the addition of Justina Ferguson as instructor of nursing at the campus. As a member of the nursing faculty, she will be teaching pathophysiology II and clinical for fundamentals.

Ms. Ferguson received her bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in nursing administration from Marywood University. She is also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and has worked in the intensive care unit and as a nursing supervisor at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton.

Alan Peslak named IST Statewide Faculty Member of the Year

Alan Peslak, associate professor of information sciences and technology (IST) at Penn State Worthington Scranton, has been named IST Statewide Faculty Member of the Year for 2012-13 by the University. He received the honor at the recent all-campus IST meeting.

The honor, which has been given annually since 2002, is given to a full-time faculty member from the Penn State system who has demonstrated a high degree of excellence and commitment to the IST/SRA programs at their campus, across the Commonwealth, and with regard to their students.

Dr. Mary-Beth Krogh-Jespersen, chancellor at Penn State Worthington Scranton, is pleased to announce the recent hiring of Marianne Gable as administrative support coordinator/assistant to the chancellor. She will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the campus' executive office and assisting the chancellor; providing customer service to the campus' faculty, staff and visitors; managing executive travel and expenses; managing and coordinating staff meetings; and overseeing the word processing department.
