A free public lecture titled "Bringing Genomic Medicine into Focus" will take place at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2, in 100 Thomas Building on the Penn State University Park campus. The speaker will be Eric Green, the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
A team of researchers headed by Penn State anthropologist Joan Richtsmeier will use genetically engineered mice and 3D imaging technology to study the development of the human midface -- upper jaw, cheekbones and eye sockets -- and how diseases and abnormalities of the head affect the growth and shape of the face. The work is being funded by a new $2.3 million five-year grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, which is part of the prestigious National Institutes of Health.
The researchers will measure facial tissues and spaces, using specialized 3D images to learn more about these defects in human patients, and will use genetically engineered mouse models to guide investigations of these human diseases. Also leading the team is Ethylin Wang Jabs of Mount Sinai Medical Institutions, New York City.
Nina Jablonski, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Penn State and a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow, is internationally known for her research on the evolution of human skin and skin color. In a video produced by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, National Institutes of Health, she discusses how human lifestyle decisions impact the health of our skin and its ability to mediate our overall health. The skin is the major interface between our internal and external environments, Jablonski notes, especially in connection with our need for vitamin D, which is critical to our body's ability to absorb calcium and maintain a healthy skeleton.
Coating a bone graft with an inorganic compound found in bones and teeth may significantly increase the likelihood of a successful implant, according to Penn State researchers. The researchers -- collaborators from the College of Medicine's Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation and the College of Engineering's Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics -- also believe this method could be used for soft musculoskeletal tissue implants and orthopedic device implants.
The first integrated understanding of how the human genome functions will be published this week -- the triumphant result of a collaborative five-year project called ENCODE, involving more than 440 researchers working in 32 labs worldwide. Penn State's contribution to the ENCODE project involves using the new ENCODE data to help explain how genetic variants that do not affect the structure of encoded proteins could affect a person's susceptibility to disease. The research findings are a significant advance in understanding the precise and complex controls over the expression of genetic information within a cell.

The specific order in which these proteins attach DNA-containing nucleosomes along the chromosome determines whether a brain cell, a liver cell, or a cancer cell is formed. Until now, it has been exceedingly difficult to determine exactly where such proteins bind to the chromosome, and therefore how they work. The new technique precisely pinpoints their location, and has the potential to take high-resolution snapshots of proteins as they regulate or miss-regulate an entire genome. A research paper that will be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences argues for new research efforts to discover effective ways for managing the evolution and slowing the spread of drug-resistant disease organisms. The research is led by Andrew Read, professor of biology and entomology and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State University.
The ultimate goal is to develop a new science-based model for drug-resistance management that will inform treatment guidelines for a wide variety of diseases that affect people, including malaria and other diseases caused by parasites, MRSA and other diseases caused by bacterial infections, AIDS and other diseases caused by viruses, and cancer.

Scientists at Penn State have used large-scale DNA sequencing data to investigate, for the first time, a longstanding evolutionary assumption: that DNA mutation rates are influenced by life-history traits, including metabolic rate and the length of time between generations. The research team found, for example, a higher rate of DNA mutations in the male sperm versus the female egg. One of the many implications of this research is that life-history traits of extinct species now could be discoverable.
Michael Chorney and Judith Bond received National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to create a model system designed to promote K-12 science education supported through the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) Program. Delirium, defined as a state of mental confusion, occurs in more than half of all hospitalized older adults with dementia. If delirium continues, it can interfere with patient rehabilitation and there is a very high risk of permanent institutionalization.
