Penn State Law and SIA launch new interdisciplinary publication

A new online forum for interdisciplinary analysis, the Penn State Journal of Law and International Affairs (JLIA), has been created at the University. "This journal is designed to promote scholarship and public discourse at the intersection of law and international affairs," said Amy Gaudion, professor of law and executive editor of the publication. "And to do so in a timely, digital, open access, peer-reviewed format."

Former State Department planning chief to speak on national security

Anne-Marie Slaughter will present "The Big Picture: Beyond Hot Spots & Crises in Our Interconnected World" at 6 p.m. on March 15 at Penn State Law. Slaughter served as director of policy planning for the United States Department of State from 2009 to 2011; the Policy Planning Staff provides independent policy analysis and advice on global trends and strategy to the Secretary of State.

Slaughter's presentation will take place in the Apfelbaum Family Auditorium in Lewis Katz Hall, 333 W. South St., Carlisle, Pa. and will be simulcast live to Lewis Katz Building in University Park. The presentation also will be available by webcast, beginning 30 minutes before the event, at http://www.law.psu.edu/. The event is free and open to the public.

State Department legal counsel to speak on national security

Harold Hongju Koh, chief legal counsel for the U.S. Department of State and professor of international law at Yale Law School, will visit Penn State Law to discuss national security on Thursday, Jan. 26. Koh's presentation, titled "A Smart Power Approach to International Law and National Security," will focus on threats, responses and accountability mechanisms that will define the future national security configuration.

Penn State expert discusses Guantanamo Bay on WPSU

United States President Barack Obama's executive order to close Guantanamo Bay poses some major challenges for the U.S. Some of the prisoners are known to be dangerous and can never be released, others face a trial of some kind, and still others are no longer considered a threat. There are many questions about what should ultimately be done with all of them. The closing of Guantanamo signifies a new era in U.S. detention policy. This timely topic will be discussed on the next "Conversations from Penn State." The show will air on WPSU-TV at 9 p.m. Thursday, June 11.

Spanier receives recognition for national security work

Penn State President Graham Spanier was recognized in Washington, D.C., on Friday for his leadership in national security. Spanier received the "Award for Excellence in Public Service" during a ceremony at FBI headquarters.
