How did you first become interested in your specialty?

My classical vocal training began to intersect with a more speech-oriented singing when I started a career as a musicals theatre performer in the 1970's. I began to see the value of adopting a broader concept of vocal technique, and continue to believe in the advantage of developing flexible voices, capable of singing in different styles.

What is the most exciting or fascinating part of your job?

Penn State School of Theatre takes role as national leader

Penn State's School of Theatre is gaining national prominence for its top-tier programs that train students who obtain and maintain employment in one of the most competitive arenas. University administrators will have an opportunity to share the successes of Penn State's theatre program during the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) Leadership Institute, Aug. 6-8 in New York City. Penn State President Graham Spanier will be the keynote speaker at the institute. Barbara O. Korner, dean of the University's College of Arts and Architecture, is co-director of the Leadership Institute, and William Doan, the college's associate dean for administration, research and graduate studies, is ATHE president-elect.

Performing Arts season features Avenue Q, Mamma Mia! and more

The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State's 2009-2010 season features an array of professional touring music, theater and dance presentations, including the State College debuts of the musical comedy Avenue Q and the hip-hop dance show Groovaloo, the return of Mamma Mia! and Stomp, banjoist Bela Fleck with guest musicians from Africa, Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, Brazil's Orquestra de Sao Paulo with percussion soloist Evelyn Glennie, Martha Graham Dance Company in the evening-length Clytemnestra, Kronos Quartet and the family musical A Year with Frog and Toad.

Tickets for the 26 September through April events at Eisenhower and Schwab auditoriums go on sale May 11 to Center for the Performing Arts members (Affiliate or higher), last-season Choice series subscribers, sponsors and underwriters. Eligible patrons may purchase tickets by phone at (814) 863-0255 or 1-800-ARTS-TIX; in person at Eisenhower or Penn State Tickets Downtown; or by mail-in order form. Penn State Altoona's Division of Arts and Humanities presents the musical theatre production Sugar April 2 - 5 in the Paul R. and Margery Wolf Kuhn Theatre of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. April 2 - 4 with a 2 p.m. matinee April 4 and 5. Tickets are $5 for Penn State Altoona students and $7 regular admission and be purchased at the Box Office.

Thespians present 'Joseph' April 2-4

The Penn State Thespians, a student-run theatre organization, will present "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," April 2-4 at Schwab Auditorium on the University Park campus. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. each day, with an additional matinee performance at 2 p.m. on April 4.

Musical theatre instructor takes to the stage for a different purpose

Spence Ford has been head of dance for Penn State's musical theatre program since its inception in 1994. She previously had a successful career on Broadway as a dancer/singer/actress in such shows as La Cage Aux Folles, Peter Pan and King of Hearts. While at Penn State, she has choreographed and directed a number of main-stage musicals, in addition to choreographing special musical revues and creating a one-woman show, "Taking Chances." But Ford's resume has been missing something you might expect to see listed among her job experiences and accomplishments -- a bachelor's degree. That will change on May 17, when she walks across the stage to receive her Penn State diploma.

William Shakespeare wrote the famed tragedy in the late 14th century, yet it is still performed and praised today. It has been adapted into opera, ballet, and screenplay, and has also been transported into innumerable time periods and locations.
