Musical version of 'The Color Purple' to be held March 22-23

"The Color Purple," a touring Broadway musical based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the film by Steven Spielberg, will visit Penn State's Center for the Performing Arts in performances at 7:30 p.m. on March 22 and 23, in Eisenhower Auditorium. The Color Purple tells the inspiring story of a woman named Celie, who finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world. The original Broadway show was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, including best musical.

Penn State students honored to be part of Obama visit

On a trip to New York City last weekend with his musical theater classmates, Penn State junior Paul Jordan Jansen was informed he was getting the opportunity to sing the national anthem in front of the president of the United States. At the same time in State College, Pa., Michael Miller, a secondary education major and Army ROTC cadet and Cadet Battalion Commander of the Nittany Lion Battalion, learned he was chosen to say the Pledge of Allegiance at the same event.

The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State's 2010-11 season features an array of professional touring music, theater and dance presentations, including classical violin superstar Joshua Bell in a solo recital and the Centre County debuts of the touring Broadway musicals Monty Python's "Spamalot," as well as "The Color Purple" and "Spring Awakening." The musical theater line-up also includes the classics "A Chorus Line" and "Fiddler on the Roof."

Hit musical 'Mamma Mia!' to show at Eisenhower Auditorium April 13-15

"Mamma Mia!," the international hit musical comedy featuring songs made famous by recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee ABBA, will come to Penn State for three performances at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, April 13, 14 and 15, in Eisenhower Auditorium. "Mamma Mia!" incorporates 22 songs by ABBA, the 1970s pop group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15. The show weaves the songs and lyrics of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who were members of ABBA, into a funny story of family and friendship written by British playwright Catherine Johnson.

'Magic Tree House' musical comes to Eisenhower stage Feb. 15

Mary Pope Osborne's beloved "Magic Tree House" books have sold more than 60 million copies worldwide and are recognized as one of the most popular children's series of all time. Now audiences can enjoy the full-scale "Magic Tree House: The Musical" onstage at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium. The musical takes the series' popular brother/sister team of Jack and Annie on their most thrilling adventure yet.

Ted Neeley stars in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' Feb. 3

"Jesus Christ Superstar" comes to Penn State for one performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Eisenhower Auditorium. The revival tour stars Ted Neeley, whose frequent portrayals of the musical's title character have won him worldwide acclaim. The musical, often called a rock opera, features the songs "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Hosanna," "Everything's Alright," "What's the Buzz," "Superstar," "Heaven on Their Mind" and "Gethsemane." Tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are $55 and $49 for an adult, $40 and $34 for a University Park student and $50 and $44 for a person 18 and younger.

Musical theatre instructor takes to the stage for a different purpose

Spence Ford has been head of dance for Penn State's musical theatre program since its inception in 1994. She previously had a successful career on Broadway as a dancer/singer/actress in such shows as La Cage Aux Folles, Peter Pan and King of Hearts. While at Penn State, she has choreographed and directed a number of main-stage musicals, in addition to choreographing special musical revues and creating a one-woman show, "Taking Chances." But Ford's resume has been missing something you might expect to see listed among her job experiences and accomplishments -- a bachelor's degree. That will change on May 17, when she walks across the stage to receive her Penn State diploma.
