University Park Regional Medical Campus welcomes first students

The University Park Regional Campus of Penn State College of Medicine welcomed its first group of thirteen medical students to begin their core clinical training, in collaboration with local Penn State Hershey faculty, Mount Nittany Medical Center faculty, and other medical providers in the community. Bringing medical students to State College from Hershey is part of the new University Park Regional Campus mission -- to create an educational environment for training the next generation of healthcare providers and improve access to patient-centered, high quality, cost-effective health care for local residents. Primary care and rural-based medicine are the centerpieces of this mission.

Trustees agree to lease exchange with Mount Nittany Medical Center

The University Board of Trustees today (Sept. 17) authorized Penn State to lease 1.8 acres of land to Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College for the purpose of adding parking spaces at the medical center to accommodate expansion of it cancer center. Mount Nittany Medical Center is a partner of Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. The 1.8 acres is adjacent to the southeast corner of the medical center's property.

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine, and Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College have teamed up to present the 2009 Family Medicine Seminar Series. The monthly seminars feature a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. with the presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m. All presentations will be held in the Galen and Nancy Dreibelbis Auditorium at Mount Nittany Medical Center. The next seminar begins Aug. 20.

Paternos pledge $1 million to Mount Nittany Medical Center campaign

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Joe and Sue Paterno announced a $1 million pledge before more than 200 guests who gathered recently at Mount Nittany Medical Center to watch the final steel beam hoisted atop the medical center's new east wing. Their gift is part of the most ambitious fundraising effort in the Medical Center's history.

Career fair to show help is still wanted in central Pennsylvania

Unemployment is on the rise in Pennsylvania and across the nation. A new study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers finds employers expect to hire 22 percent fewer 2009 college graduates than they hired from the Class of 2008. But in central Pennsylvania, it's not all bad news for workers. Employers and Penn State adult students who are about to graduate, as well as University alumni and local residents, can explore job opportunities at the Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair on April 22.

In observance of National Healthcare Decisions Day, Mount Nittany Medical Center will present "Make Your Healthcare Wishes Known" at 4 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 in the Galen and Nancy Dreibelbis Auditorium. The program is designed to educate the public about the importance of advance directives and provide assistance with creating them.

Bagley slated to give 2009 Mayers Lecture

Bruce Bagley, M.D., medical director for quality improvement at the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), will give the 12th annual Stanley P. Mayers Endowed Lecture on April 14. The lecture will be presented by Penn State's Department of Health Policy and Administration, in conjunction with the Mount Nittany Medical Center. Dr. Bagley's lecture, "The Primary Care Crisis in America -- Redesigning Practices to Meet the Challenge," will begin at 7:30 p.m. at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel's Dean's Hall.

Student emergency visits for alcohol treatment reach new high

The number of Penn State student visits to the Mount Nittany Medical Center emergency department for alcohol-related treatment hit a record high in calendar year 2008, with 558 students receiving medical help. In 2005, 304 students made alcohol-related visits, an 84 percent increase in three years. "With local businesses joining with student groups this week to promote a so-called State Patty's Day event this coming Saturday, I'm concerned about the increasing toll this is having on students and others in this community," said Bill Mahon, vice president for University Relations and co-chair of the Campus and Community Partnership United Against Dangerous Drinking.

Charity ball to benefit Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center

The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center will hold its 61st annual charity ball on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Nittany Lion Inn on Penn State's University Park campus. This year's theme is "Discovering Hope: Moving Mental Health Forward." Proceeds will benefit Mount Nittany Medical Center's Mental Health Unit. The evening will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m. Dancing to the John Parker Band will follow the dinner. Black tie is preferred.

First community seed grant awarded at Mount Nittany Medical Center

Building on its mission of reinventing diabetes care, Penn State Institute for Diabetes and Obesity recently awarded its first community seed grant to Mount Nittany Medical Center. The $25,797 grant will be used toward Mount Nittany's rural diabetes education program.
