Optical wireless applications group to meet at Penn State

Improving communications security and efficiency, eliminating electromagnetic interference and easing the spectrum crunch are some of the topics that will be tackled at the third Industrial Advisory Board meeting of the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Optical Wireless Applications (COWA), May 15-17, on the Penn State University Park campus.

Improved security, the absence of electromagnetic interference, a solution to the current spectrum crunch and energy efficiency are a few of the topics that will be discussed at the first meeting of the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Optical Wireless Applications, a joint project of Penn State and the Georgia Institute of Technology funded by the National Science Foundation. The workshop will take place May 20-22 at the Nittany Lion Inn on Penn State's University Park campus. The workshop is free, but participants must register. LED lights point shoppers in the right direction

Looking for an item in a large department store or mall can be like searching for a needle in a haystack, but that could change thanks to a hybrid location-identification system that uses radio frequency transmitters and overhead LED lights, suggested by a team of researchers from Penn State and Hallym University in South Korea. "LED lights are becoming the norm," said Mohsen Kavehrad, W.L. Weiss Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering and director of the Center for Information and Communications Technology Research at Penn State. "The same lights that brighten a room can also provide locational information."
