MLK celebration brings together campus, community, businesses

In honor of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., student volunteers from Penn State New Kensington and other Penn State campuses in western Pennsylvania took on community service projects in DuBois, Pa. Billed as Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off, the activities were part of the University's celebration of King. Jan. 21 was a federal holiday and there were no classes.

Billed as Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off, the activities are a part of the University's celebration of King's birthday. Jan. 16 is a federal holiday and there are no classes.

August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble highlights Unity Day celebration

A performance by the August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble on Jan. 22, highlights the celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Penn State New Kensington.

The ensemble's "Diversity of Dance" is set for 7:30 p.m., in the Forum Theatre. The Pittsburgh-based company's performance is the grand finale of the daylong "Celebration of Unity" that pays tribute to the legacy of King. The celebration includes a Non-Profit Volunteer Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., panel discussion Hunger, Homelessness and Education from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and a community dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m. All events are free to the public.

Exhibit highlights Martin Luther King Day poster art

"Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month," an exhibit featuring posters designed by Penn State students in the University's 28th annual MLK poster competition, will be displayed from Jan. 11 to Feb. 28, in the entry lobby of Pattee Library. This year's theme is "Let Justice Lead and Freedom Roar."

The student posters were created in professor Lanny Sommese's Graphic Design 400 Time and Sequence course. This annual exercise for Sommese's students exposes them to real-world design with a fixed deadline and client and prescribed project specifications. It also gets the students involved in a public service project --something that is very important to Sommese.

Abington students experience the 'Keeper of the Dream'

It could have been 1963. It appeared as if civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., with his powerful presence and message, was exhorting a room full of college students with "I Have A Dream." In reality, it was 2012, and the Penn State Abington students were actually being mesmerized by Jim Lucas, a presenter who bears a traffic-stopping resemblance in looks and speech to Dr. King, as he reminded them that the dream is still a work in progress.

A multimedia performance of "King's Dream" will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The performance is a tribute to the life and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. Key Arts Productions uses songs, live narrative and powerful film footage in this presentation of what led to an era of social unrest in America during the turbulent 1960s.

Libraries celebrate MLK Day with two films

To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday Jan. 16, Penn State University Libraries will show two videos in Foster Auditorium, 101 Paterno Library, on the University Park campus. The first, from 10 a.m. to noon, will be "Freedom Riders;" the second, from 2 to 3 p.m., will be "For Love of Liberty: the Story of America's Black Patriots."

Online collection examines 1960s Civil Rights Movement

Now viewable online through Penn State University Libraries, the Jack Rabin Collection on Alabama Civil Rights and Southern Activists is a compact but highly complex, multi-layered compilation of documents, sound recordings and visual images. Some of its components, including copies of records of the Montgomery Improvements Association (MIA) and many hours of oral history of the renowned civil liberties lawyer Clifford Durr, complement major holdings in other American archives.

Students will conduct outreach for Martin Luther King holiday

Continuing their tradition of taking "A Day On, Not a Day Off," many Penn State Beaver students will join students from the western Penn State campuses to conduct community services projects on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 16. The day is a holiday for Penn State students.

Inclement weather forces cancelation of Martin Luther King Jr. event

The Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Evening Celebration, originally scheduled for Jan. 18 at Eisenhower Auditorium on the University Park campus, has been canceled. The inclement weather affecting large parts of the country has prevented keynote speaker Julian Bond from traveling to State College. The event will not be rescheduled.
