College students who have studied overseas often return home finding that their experiences transformed them. Many Penn State students' global education focuses on service-learning projects in developing nations. The results of their extended visits have transformed entire villages with improved quality of life. A Big Ten Network series premiering in July highlights several of these dual-benefit service-learning opportunities. "Global Penn State" debuts at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 25, on the Big Ten Network.
Global Programs launches portal to connect international initiatives

Internationalization strategies recommended to trustees
Penn State plans to continue promoting worldwide citizenship among its students to attain global leadership in scholarship and international engagements, by enhancing its study abroad and international student recruitment, the Board of Trustees learned Friday (Jan. 23). Michael Adewumi, vice provost for International Programs, told board members that enhancing traditional methods and providing a strong framework for broader international interactions would allow the University to strengthen its international position and provide students greater opportunities.

An Alliance for Africa
For the children of Mpumalanga, South Africa, a typical walk to school involves picking a path across land abandoned by a coal-mining company, dodging sinkholes, and holding cloth to nose to avoid breathing in toxic gases and dust from underground fires raging below. It's not unusual for children to be swallowed up during this walk, or for nearby roads to cave in, taking cars or buses with them.
