Six selected as communications student marshals

Six graduating seniors have been selected to serve as student marshals for the College of Communications during spring commencement exercises scheduled at noon Saturday, May 4, in the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus of Penn State.

Retweeted health messages may not be what the patient ordered

People are more likely to trust health messages tweeted by doctors who have a lot of followers, but not the messages they retweet, according to researchers. A study of the credibility of health messages on Twitter showed that credibility dips when doctors who have a large number of Twitter followers passed on messages, instead of composing their own tweets, according to Ji Young Lee, a Penn State master's degree graduate in media studies. The study shows how people infer credibility and trust based on certain cues, said S. Shyam Sundar, distinguished professor of communications and co-director of Penn State's Media Effects Research Laboratory, who worked with Lee on the study.

A book by an associate professor in the College of Communications that introduces the theory of a "muted democracy" and demonstrates how it applies to the regulatory framework of media in Israel has earned high praise from observers of Israeli culture and media. In "Muting Israeli Democracy: How Media and Cultural Policy Undermine Free Expression," published this year by University of Illinois Press, Amit Schejter argues that the laws governing Israeli electronic media are structured to limit the boundaries of public discourse. Additionally, he argues that electronic media are designed to provide a platform for some voices to be heard over others.

I'm sitting in the Alumni Hall of the new HUB-Robeson Center, admiring the gleaming facility. Large windows cast pillars of light into the room. Tastefully painted pilasters frame the stage, which is topped by a massive speaker blaring Top 40 hits. Teen idol Britney Spears belts out her latest cookie-cutter single. Rival Christina Aguilera follows; the only difference I notice is in the lyrics. Then come the commercials: dial 1-800 CALL ATT for collect calls; use America Online when you chat on your computer.

Shyam Sundar Sethuraman, director of the Media Effects Research Laboratory at Penn State, uses electrodes to monitor people's reactions to everything from download speed on the Internet to the size of a television screen to how seating affects enjoyment in a movie theater.

"Essentially, what we do is look at people's reactions to various stimuli," Sundar says. These stimuli include television, cable, Internet, laserdisc, and video sources.
