Penn State team to compete in NASA student launch project

A team of students representing Penn State will compete April 17-21 in Alabama at the NASA University Student Launch Initiative (USLI). The USLI is an annual event that challenges teams of young engineers and scientists to design, test and build large, high-powered rockets, capable of flying to the target altitude of one mile.

Norfolk Southern Railway No. 999 is the first all-electric, battery-powered locomotive in the United States. But when one of the thousand lead-acid batteries that power it dies, the locomotive shuts down. To combat this problem, a team of Penn State researchers is developing more cost-effective ways to prolong battery life.

Students recognized for engineering designs at showcase

Two teams came away with top project awards from the Engineering Design Showcase on Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Engineering Design Showcase is the culmination of a semester-long effort by students to solve real-world problems posed by industry sponsors. Participants include first-year students through seniors across a number of engineering disciplines.

The projects "Laser Non-Contact Measurement of Moving Product," sponsored by ArcelorMittal, and "LNG Test Rig Movable LSD Vanes," sponsored by Dresser Rand, won first-place Lockheed Martin Design Awards for best project.

Co-op, internship student of the year awards announced

The Engineering Career Resources and Employer Relations office has awarded its top honors to two students for 2012-13.

Sienna George, a senior majoring in chemical engineering and toxicology, received the Dr. James Slick Cooperative Education Student of the Year Award for completing her co-op at Dow Agrosciences. At Dow, her responsibilities included leading a team of supply chain specialists in charge of evaluating and designing a bulk terminal network for new products.

Katherine Shea, a senior in mechanical engineering, received the Anita M. Todd Internship Student of the Year Award for completing her internship at ArcelorMittal USA. Her responsibilities included supervising a 40-person workforce in a steel manufacturing plant, assisting in the construction of a $54 million reheat furnace, executing the installation of a new pump and motor system, and implementing new safety and job requirement policies.

Partnership with Chinese university furthers power generation research

The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering hosted 11 members of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) mechanical engineering faculty for a joint workshop on power generation research Oct. 10 and 11. The purpose of the workshop was to share each university's current research in combustion and aero-thermal heat transfer processes related to advanced power generation systems to see where future collaborations might be beneficial.

Society of Women Engineers wins national essay contest

Where do you think your shoes could take you? Could you explain it effectively in 350 words for cash prizes for your organization? "Where will your shoes take you?" was the essay question that the Penn State Society of Women Engineers (SWE) answered in 350 words that won them a total of $16,800 in prize money to be given in part to their engineering programs.
