G. Albert Shoemaker Lecture to focus on Marcellus Shale development

William Fustos, the former chief operating officer at East Resources, will be giving a lecture on "The Marcellus Shale: Economic Boom for Pennsylvania, Energy Security for the U.S.," as Penn State's 2013 G. Albert Shoemaker Lecturer in Mineral Engineering. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, with a reception in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum Gallery on the ground floor of Deike Building. The lecture begins promptly at 4 p.m., in Room 22 Deike Building.

Panel dicussion to focus on 'Marcellus and the Media'

Webinar examines link between shale gas and chemical manufacturing

A Web-based seminar focusing on the role of shale-gas development in chemical manufacturing will be presented by Penn State Extension at 1 p.m. on Jan. 17. The one-hour webinar, "America's New Industrial Revolution: A Renaissance for U.S. Chemical Manufacturing," will feature Dan Borne, president of the Louisiana Chemical Association.

Analysis of Marcellus flowback finds high levels of ancient brines

Brine water that flows back from gas wells in the Marcellus Shale region after hydraulic fracturing is many times more salty than seawater, with high contents of various elements, including radium and barium. The chemistry is consistent with brines formed during the Paleozoic era, a study by an undergraduate student and two professors in Penn State's Department of Geosciences found.

The study indicates that the brine flowback elements found in high levels in the late stages of hydraulic fracturing come from the ancient brines rather than from salts dissolved by the water and chemicals used as part of the fracking process. The paper by Lara O. Haluszczak, a Penn State student who has since graduated; professor emeritus Arthur W. Rose; and Lee R. Kump, professor and head of the Department of Geosciences; detailing those findings has been accepted for publication in Applied Geochemistry, the journal of the International Association of Geochemistry, and is available online.

Marcellus Shale boom sparks student's interest in oil, gas law

Third-year law student Zach Morahan has been awarded one of only 10 scholarships granted nationwide by the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation (EMLF). "I was very excited to hear about winning an EMLF scholarship," Morahan said. "Being selected as a recipient has helped to affirm my study of oil and gas law, and reinforced my interest in all aspects of the oil and gas sector." The scholarship amount is $3,000. For Morahan, who grew up in northeast Pennsylvania, pursuing a career in energy and natural resources law seemed logical. "As a resident of northeastern Pennsylvania, I witnessed the booming interest in Marcellus Shale develop from its infancy," explained Morahan. "In areas where property formerly sold for $1,500 an acre, gas companies were leasing the same property for $5,000-plus an acre. It created a level of excitement that I never witnessed in our region."

Natural gas utilization conference to be held in State College

The Penn State Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research (MCOR) and the Ben Franklin Shale Gas Innovation and Commercialization Center (SGICC) are co-sponsoring the Natural Gas Utilization Conference, set for Sept. 6-7 at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on Penn State's University Park campus. The conference will address critical efforts under way to increase the utilization of natural gas and natural gas liquids.

Alumni Library highlights Marcellus Shale resources

From 2007 through 2011, there were more than 16,000 articles in Pennsylvania newspapers that mentioned the Marcellus Shale and more than 29,000 articles nationally (data obtained from the Access World News database). Prior to this, hardly anyone had heard of the Marcellus Shale. The recent issue of the Alumni Library at alumni.libraries.psu.edu examines information related to the natural gas resources in the Marcellus Shale and other natural gas-bearing black shales in the U.S.

Ceremony marks opening of Energy Technology Education Center

The Energy Technology Education Center, a collaboration featuring Pennsylvania College of Technology, the Lycoming County Department of Public Safety and natural gas industry partners, was formally dedicated May 18. Facilities and equipment at the ETEC will support hands-on training for workers in the natural gas industry and other energy-related fields, as well as emergency-response personnel.

Local collection of state taxes rises in Marcellus Shale counties

Natural-gas development appears to be having a positive effect on the local collection of state taxes in Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale region, according to a report by researchers in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. "Marcellus Shale and Local Collection of State Taxes: What the 2011 Pennsylvania Tax Data Say" is a white paper published by the Penn State Center for Economic and Community Development.

Study suggests shale-gas development causing rapid landscape change

As the Marcellus natural-gas play unfolds in Pennsylvania, several trends are becoming increasingly clear, according to researchers at Penn State.

First, most of the development is occurring on private land, and the greatest amount of development falls within the Susquehanna River basin. Second, a regional approach to siting drilling infrastructure is needed to help minimize development in core forest and productive agricultural lands and to decrease the potential risk to waterways.

The "Marcellus Shale Electronic Field Guide" is an unbiased manual aimed at presenting the best possible options in Marcellus Shale development for Pennsylvania's future.
