Seminar explores grassroots entrepreneurship in rural communities

"Local Knowledge Systems for Grassroots Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Lessons from Rural Communities in Australia and the U.S." will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, in Foster Auditorium, 102 Paterno Library on the University Park campus of Penn State. This seminar is the latest event in an ongoing speaker series sponsored by the Interinstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge and the Social Sciences Library. Presenter Michael Fortunato is a post-doctoral research associate and lecturer in the Center for Economic and Community Development at Penn State.

Chief of Risk and Resilience at Argonne National Library to speak on April 3

Phillips, chief of risk and resilience section in the Infrastructure Assurance Center (IAC) at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, will speak from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in room 121 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building at Penn State Berks. USA Today reporter to give free talk on 'Science News in the Digital Age'

Giant squids, arsenic-loving microbes, and politicians badgering scientists over climate studies will be featured in a free public lecture by Dan Vergano, an award-winning science reporter and columnist for USA Today. The talk, titled "Science News in the Digital Age: A Brave New World," will take place at 11 a.m. April 6, in 100 Thomas Building. The event is the 2013 A. Dixon and Betty F. Johnson Lecture in Scientific Communication.

Bronner to present family Holocaust saga April 9

Penn State Harrisburg’s Center for Holocaust and Jewish Studies will conclude its 2012-13 calendar of events with a presentation by Simon Bronner titled “From Auschwitz to America: A Holocaust Family Saga,” at noon on April 9. Bronner will tell the story of his family, whose Holocaust saga begins with residence in Oswiecim, Poland, now known more commonly as Auschwitz.

School violence prevention event April 1 examines child safety, research

Since the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December, legislators and policy makers have been searching for ways to prevent school violence. Penn State, in collaboration with several local school districts, will hold a special event April 1 to explore how community advocates and researchers can work together to prevent tragedies in schools.
