Alumni, faculty and students to discuss economic crisis at open forum

Liberal Arts alumni and Penn State economists will discuss the impact of recent changes in the financial system and suggest new opportunities for undergraduates in a forum on the current state of the U.S. economy from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in 112 Kern Building on Penn State's University Park campus. The forum is open to the public.

Sainburg to discuss evolution of handedness

Robert Sainburg, associate professor of kinesiology and neurology in Penn State's College of Health and Human Development, will present the 2009 Pattishall Research Lecture. Sainburg's lecture, titled "The Evolutionary Advantage of Handedness," will begin at 4 p.m. Monday, April 6, in the Bennett-Pierce Living Center, 110 Henderson Building on The University Park campus of Penn State. The event, sponsored by the College of Health and Human Development, is free and open to the public.

Yilmaz to discuss the use of ePrometheus in nuclear power

Serkan Yilmaz, a lead engineer with General Electric's Energy/Global Nuclear Fuel division, will present "GNF Advanced Fuel Cycle Optimization System -- ePrometheus" at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, in 135 Reber. A reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. in 125 Reber. The seminar is part of the NUCE 590 seminar series from the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering.

Economics centers sponsor key events on financial issues

Global financial issues amidst the current economic turmoil are among the top issues highlighting three major events organized by Penn State's economics research centers, part of the College of the Liberal Arts. Two Nobel Laureates in economics will be keynote speakers at this year's annual conference sponsored by the Center for the Study of Auctions, Procurements and Competition Policy from March 26 to 29 at the University Park campus. On April 3, The Center for the Study of Auctions, Procurements and Competition Policy also is co-sponsoring a conference on "Volatilities and Correlations in Stressed Markets" on April 3, at New York University's Stern School of Business.

Industry speaker to distinguish facts, fictions in shale discussion

The Marcellus Shale has unique elements that set it apart from other economic developments with far greater social and environmental impacts, said an industry spokesman. "Range Resources and the entire gas-producing industry want to educate the public on what is fact and what is fiction with Marcellus Shale natural gas development," said Matt Pitzarella, director of public affairs for Range Resources Appalachia (RRC). "While gas drilling companies may be competitors, the industry is working together closely to help educate an engaged public in Pennsylvania. Most importantly nearly every Pennsylvanian realizes the enormous long-term benefits of developing clean-burning natural gas from the Commonwealth." Pitzarella will give a talk, "Public Outreach and Education in the Marcellus Shale: Hype, Hope and Factual Information," at 4 p.m. Monday, March 30, in 112 Walker on the University Park campus of Penn State.

Professor examines cartilage response to exercise

Timothy Mosher, professor of radiology and orthopaedics and vice chair of radiology research in the College of Medicine, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, will present "MRI Techniques for the Study of Cartilage Response to Exercise" from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Friday, March 27, in 127 Noll Lab on the University Park campus. The talk is part of the Noll Seminar Series.

Liberal Arts Week speaker to talk about taxes, stimulus and jobs

To kick off Liberal Arts Week, Penn State alumnus Jeff Hyde will give the keynote speech, "The Stimulus Package, Tax Plans and the Future: Can I still get a job in this mess?" at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 30, in 112 Kern Building on Penn State's University Park campus. His talk is free to the public. The College of the Liberal Arts Undergraduate Council sponsors Liberal Arts Week events, March 30-April 2, for the greater Penn State community.

Penn State Pullers subject of March 31 seminar

Samuel Blaydon of Penn State Pullers and the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering will present "Penn State Pullers: Beyond the Track" from 11 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, March 31 in room 244 of the Agricultural Engineering Building on the University Park campus. The Penn State Pullers is a student organization that designs and builds from scratch a fully operational 1/4 scale tractor every year. With the help of students from various majors and sponsors, the group competes in the annual ASABE International Student Design Competition in Peoria, Illinois.

Schreyer Institute sets last luncheon on teaching sustainability

The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence's Teaching Luncheon "Teaching Sustainability across the Curriculum" series concludes on Thursday, April 2 with "Disciplinary Approaches to Environment Inquiry." Co-sponsored by the Arboretum at Penn State, the luncheon will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 315 Rider Building. Penn State Fayette will participate by Polycom. Faculty are invited to join this interdisciplinary conversation about how Penn State faculty are responding to the challenges of environmental sustainability and to discuss opportunities for collaboration.

Surgeon to offer medical assessment of health care today

David C. Han, a vascular surgeon at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, takes center stage in the debate about the current state of the practice of medicine as he presents "What's Wrong/Right with Health Care Today" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at the State Theatre in downtown State College. The lecture is free and open to the public. Han, who also serves as the director of Hershey's vascular surgery division, is delivering the Schreyer Honors College's 14th Annual Mark Luchinsky Memorial Lecture.
