Crowd gathered to celebrate OLLI Founders' Day in York

More than 160 people attended the first Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Founders' Day at Penn State York on May 17 featuring Karl Pillemer, well-known author of "30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans." Pillemer is a professor of gerontology in medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College and Human Development in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. He shared his extensive experience as a gerontologist and the relationships he developed with the mature American population as part of his presentation at the OLLI Founders' Day event.
The Legacy Project that began in 2004 gave Dr. Pillemer the opportunity to collect responses from America's elders to the question, "What are the most important lessons you have learned over the course of your life?" People from across the country in their 70s and beyond shared their wisdom for living.

Probing Question: How is the English language changing?

The number of first-generation immigrants in the U.S. has quadrupled since 1970. According to Suresh Canagarajah, this suggests that more Americans than ever speak multiple languages, and that "as diverse communities take over English and use it according to their values, English itself is also getting diversified.

Author to speak at OLLI Founders' Day Lecture May 17

Dr. Karl Pillemer, well-known author of "30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans," is the speaker for Penn State York's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's (OLLI) first Founders' Day Lecture set for May 17 in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building at the campus. The celebration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon and social hour followed by the lecture. Tickets are on sale now at $25 for OLLI members and $30 for nonmembers. For tickets call (717) 771-4015 or e-mail OLLI at olli@yk.psu.edu. Deadline for purchase is May 1.

Registration is under way at Penn State York for Early Success, a program designed to help students with disabilities improve their learning and study skills. The program is set for 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 11 and covers a variety of topics to help students with disabilities get what they need in college. Students who plan to enroll in college or a vocational training program in the fall, students who currently attend college and would like summer support, and high school students with disabilities are welcome.

'Brain Game' offers techniques to improve learning, study skills

There's still time to register for the "Brain Game" at Penn State York. This course is designed to help students improve their learning and study skills. The "Brain Game" offers students tips to help overcome test-taking jitters and offers strategies to keep from daydreaming. The course, held from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 10, is geared for high school or college-bound students who want to improve their skills.

"For people who have severe communication disabilities, there's added importance. Very often they use writing as their channel of communication.
