Many homeowners live in envy of those neighbors who seem able to turn a few trees, flowers and even rocks into an inviting outdoor scene. But you, too, can do it by following a few basic guidelines, according to a horticulturist in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. New or veteran homeowners hoping to enhance the look of their properties can use sustainable practices to express creativity, create habitat for wildlife and define special-use areas with year-round interest, said James Sellmer, associate professor of ornamental horticulture.
Continuing Education offers Sustainable Landscape Technology program

The Penn State Beaver Office of Continuing Education is offering a Sustainable Landscape Technology Certificate, a six-course program that will begin in January. The program also will be available at Penn State Fayette and the Penn State Center-Pittsburgh.

Garrett M. Book, who received his associate degree in ornamental horticulture: landscape technology emphasis from Pennsylvania College of Technology in May, has achieved designation as a Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturist.

It's that time of year. Tulips are in bloom all across campus. The mall trees are coming back to life. The ducks have returned to bring entertainment to the usually quiet pond outside the Alumni Center. All signs point to the arrival of spring in Happy Valley. But what is behind every perfectly placed flower? Who is responsible for ensuring our ducks have a pleasant body of water and surroundings to come back to every April? That would be none other than a special team at Penn State known as the Office of Physical Plant's Division of Campus Planning and Design. Report outlines landscape enhancements at Penn State campuses

The Penn State Board of Trustees on Nov. 6 heard an informational report on landscape improvements of several Penn State campuses from Gordon Turow, director of campus planning and design. Landscape influences the perception of the character and quality of the University and the educational experience it offers. "According to a well-known study, many high school seniors base their choice of an institution in large part on the appearance of the campus buildings and grounds," Turow said. "Most of them make that decision within the first 15 minutes of arriving on campus."
Landscape Architect Herbert Dreiseitl to give public lecture

Landscape architect and artist Herbert Dreiseitl will give a free public lecture titled "Waterscapes for Cities of the Future," at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, in 112 Chambers Building on Penn State's University Park campus. Dreiseitl is the first speaker this year in the Department of Landscape Architecture's Bracken Lecture Series.

Five Pennsylvania College of Technology students and their faculty mentor volunteered their landscaping talents at the Williamsport YWCA as part of the PLANET (Professional Landcare Network) Day of Service. The students are enrolled in the ornamental horticulture: landscape technology major in the college's School of Natural Resources Management.
Industry leader makes donation to college's horticulture program

The California-based ValleyCrest Landscape Companies recently donated $750 to help students in the School of Natural Resources Management at Pennsylvania College of Technology build a walkway to the conifer garden at the college's Schneebeli Earth Science Center. ValleyCrest also was at the college's recent Career Fair to talk with students about summer internships and full-time employment opportunities.

To the anthropologists, archaeologists, demographers, geographers, and economists who met last weekend at Dartmouth College for the annual meeting of the Society for Economic Anthropology, "landscape" is shorthand for how people perceive their environment and interact with it.

Ask the average person to name his or her ancestors, and you might hear about Great-Grandpa Joe or Great-Aunt Tillie. Ask Chris Uhl to define "family," and you're likely to hear about chimpanzees, bacteria, and even the "Big Bang" theory.

I have traveled to Italy every year since 1991. My first interest was to learn about my heritage. Gradually, however, I became more and more interested in the 20th-century master Giorgio Morandi, who lived and painted most of his life in Bologna. Morandi has been called "a painter's painter." His subtle, seemingly repetitive still lifes are universal and particular at once: They are deliberately stripped of recognizable detail, but they are painted in the subdued, earthy colors of Bologna.
