First Friday Series puts spotlight on studying abroad

Ever thought about studying abroad? Penn State York's global programs will offer a presentation Jan. 11 by Penn State students who have spent semesters and summers in other countries. The program is at noon, in the Community Room of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center.

Penn State's Center for the Study of Higher Education will host the India Higher Education Academy in 2013 as part of the 21st Century Knowledge Initiative launched by U.S. President Barack Obama and India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh. The academy is designed to address the needs and goals of higher education in India.

Penn State ranked eighth in the nation in doctorate institutions in numbers of students on study abroad in the 2007-08 academic year according to information released Monday (Nov. 16) by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The University also placed eighth in sending students on mid-length (semester) education abroad programs, 17th in sending students on short-term programs, and 25th in institutions hosting international students for the academic year 2008-09.

Holocaust survivor to speak at Penn College

The Rev. Hermann Scheipers, a German priest who survived a World War II concentration camp and escaped a death march, will speak at Pennsylvania College of Technology on Oct. 19. Scheipers' presentation, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the International Programs Office; it was arranged by Steven J. Moff, associate professor of business administration/marketing.

Faculty Senate receives update on University Strategic Plan

Penn State's University Faculty Senate held its first meeting of 2009 Tuesday (Jan. 27) and received a special report from Rodney Erickson, executive vice president and provost, updating the progress of the University Strategic Planning Council. The Senate also passed revisions to the Senate constitution and bylaws related to voting units and Senate Council membership, as well as the Senate standing rules on committee structures. Several informational reports also were presented.

Internationalization strategies recommended to trustees

Penn State plans to continue promoting worldwide citizenship among its students to attain global leadership in scholarship and international engagements, by enhancing its study abroad and international student recruitment, the Board of Trustees learned Friday (Jan. 23). Michael Adewumi, vice provost for International Programs, told board members that enhancing traditional methods and providing a strong framework for broader international interactions would allow the University to strengthen its international position and provide students greater opportunities.

School of Hospitality Management forms global partnership

Representatives from Penn State's School of Hospitality Management, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Hoge Hotelschool Maastricht (HHM), in The Netherlands, have finalized plans for the implementation of a Global Hospitality Management Program between the three schools. The program is designed to provide students with a year-and-a-half-long, internationally oriented curriculum. The first cohort, consisting of five students per school, will begin at CUHK in fall 2009. They will move on to HHM in spring 2010 and Penn State in fall 2010.

Penn State ranks 12th among study abroad programs

Penn State's University Park campus was ranked 12th among U.S. doctorate-granting universities with the most students studying abroad in 2006-07, according to the 2008 Open Doors report published annually by the Institute of International Education. According to the report released Monday (Nov. 17), 1,830 Penn State students attending University Park were studying abroad. However, for the first time, the report listed separate figures for Penn State students at other locations, therefore the total for the entire University stands at 2,183 students studying abroad, slightly ahead of the 2,168 total in last year's report.

Visit by South Koreans underscores campus' international focus

Penn State Harrisburg writes another chapter in its expanding focus on global education this fall when a second delegation of South Korean schoolteachers comes to campus for a monthlong program to enhance their abilities in English while learning about American culture. Building on the success of an educational visit from a similar group of Korean schoolteachers over the summer, the Oct. 27 to Nov. 21 experience will involve 22 teachers from the Incheon School District, one of the nation's largest with 480,000 students.

Adewumi named Fellow of Nigerian Academy of Engineering

Michael Adewumi, vice provost for international programs, has been elected as a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering. This is a lifelong designation. As a Fellow, Adewumi will work to uphold the objectives of the academy, including but not limited to advising appropriate bodies on the technical resources that should be applied to meet the changing needs of Nigeria and sponsoring programs aimed at meeting those needs; providing independent and expert advice on matters of national importance pertinent to engineering and technology; interacting with professional bodies, engineering and scientific academies, locally and internationally; and providing a forum for Nigerian engineers to report on research and development activities in engineering.

Penn State offers tailored learning for company in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Aramco, the state-owned national oil company of Saudi Arabia, wanted to educate its employees in the foundations of supply chain and recognized Penn State's expertise in that area -- specifically, the Smeal College of Business's Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems. That department offers a graduate certificate online via Penn State World Campus. While Aramco wanted to learn more about Penn State's online learning environment, the company was more comfortable with traditional face-to-face learning for its employees.
