A new online forum for interdisciplinary analysis, the Penn State Journal of Law and International Affairs (JLIA), has been created at the University. "This journal is designed to promote scholarship and public discourse at the intersection of law and international affairs," said Amy Gaudion, professor of law and executive editor of the publication. "And to do so in a timely, digital, open access, peer-reviewed format."
Penn State Law announces partnership with Dubai Judicial Institute

To pave the way for an exchange of research and educational opportunities, Penn State University Dickinson School of Law and the Dubai Judicial Institute signed a collaboration agreement. Jamal Al Sumaiti, director general of Dubai Judicial Institute and Philip J. McConnaughay, dean and Donald J. Farage Professor of Law and International Affairs signed the agreement on July 8.
Lawyers and judges get Penn State Law experience in Istanbul

Sukru Say, a Turkish Tax Court Judge of seven years, is among the group of international legal practitioners who recently completed the Intensive Introduction to U.S. Law and Advocacy, held at Yeditepe University in Istanbul and taught by members of the Penn State Law faculty. "I was tremendously impressed by the interchange of ideas between students and faculty and also by the opportunity to obtain critical understanding of law in its socio-legal, comparative and interdisciplinary context," he said. Participants included practicing lawyers and judges from Turkey, Kazakhstan, Cameroon, Ukraine and Nigeria.

The International Law Society and the Student Government Association of the School of International Affairs are hosting a roundtable discussion on recent U.S.-relevant developments in trade, law, human rights, and strategic affairs in South and East Asia. "Power and Diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific" will be held at Penn State Law's Lewis Katz Building, University Park, Pa., beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 and will feature a panel of experienced scholars and diplomats who will offer their perspectives on current events and ongoing issues in the region.

Harold Hongju Koh, chief legal counsel for the U.S. Department of State and professor of international law at Yale Law School, will visit Penn State Law to discuss national security on Thursday, Jan. 26. Koh's presentation, titled "A Smart Power Approach to International Law and National Security," will focus on threats, responses and accountability mechanisms that will define the future national security configuration.

A four-week Intensive Introduction to American Law program in Istanbul (July 2 to 29) will provide legal and business practitioners from around the world with an overview of American law as it operates in the global business environment. The curriculum will be taught by Penn State Law professors known globally for their expertise in antitrust, arbitration, contracts, international choice of law, the U.S. regulation of international business, property, advocacy, and writing. The certificate program includes eight different classes taught over two, two-week semesters.
Penn State student Shevlin thrives on Law and International Affairs

When Lisa Pex Shevlin of the class of 2011 graduates this spring, she will have both a doctor of laws degree and a master of international affairs degree, a feat she has been able to accomplish in three years thanks to her impressive skills in time management. "My interests have always been in law and international affairs," said Shevlin. "The integration of these disciplines here at Penn State Law and the School of International Affairs (SIA) has allowed me to efficiently accomplish my goals."
