HRIM alum returns to Penn State as Nittany Lion Inn GM

As the new general manager of The Nittany Lion Inn, Tom Neely has gone full circle--and he couldn't be happier about it. With a degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management, 25 years of experience in the hotel industry, and a vivacious passion for the University, Neely says he's proud to be part of the Penn State community again.

Students take charge of hotels, build team decision-making skills

Students in one hotel, restaurant, and institutional management course get a sneak peak at some of the complex decisions they'll have to make as future hotel managers. In the course, HRIM 480: Advanced Hotel Management, students assume the role of manager through a computer simulation known as Hotel Operational Training Simulation (HOTS).

Gaming and casino management students travel to Las Vegas

Steve Durham, instructor in hospitality management at Penn State, accompanied 14 students on a field trip to Las Vegas during the first week of March. The students performed research for a class assignment by conducting an extensive property profile, and they also had the chance to tour various facilities in Las Vegas and learn about different aspects of the casino industry. "Penn State is establishing a presence in Las Vegas," said Durham. "In just three such field trips, a strong relationship with several top-tier companies has been established so that students are guaranteed a welcoming reception when inquiring about internships and jobs."

Students network and refine research at graduate student conference

Lydia Hanks had a tremendous experience at her first research-centered conference. A graduate student in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management (HRIM), Hanks presented two posters on her own research. "I received great feedback from other students and faculty from other schools," she says. "This helped me to further clarify my research and how I can move forward."

Hanks was among the sixteen Penn State graduate students (fourteen studying HRIM and two studying Recreation, Park and Tourism Management) attending the fifteenth annual Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism, held January 7-9, 2010, in Washington, D.C.

PSHRS names Kimpton's Leondakis Hospitality Executive of the Year

Niki Leondakis, chief operating officer of Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, has been named the 2009 Hospitality Executive of the Year by the Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society (PSHRS). Leondakis will receive the award during the 48th Hospitality Executive of the Year Award Reception on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Rosenthal Pavilion of the Kimmel Center at New York University. As part of the honor, Leondakis will also be inducted into the Penn State Hospitality Hall of Fame, located at The Nittany Lion Inn on Penn State's University Park campus.

Juran Fellowship enhances student's research

Alinda Kokkinou, a doctoral student in the School of Hospitality Management, has been selected as a Juran Fellow for this year by the Joseph M. Juran Center for Leadership in Quality at the University of Minnesota. Kokkinou's research deals with self-service technology (SST) in a hospitality setting.

Food Services and academic program collaborate on new internship

Penn State University Park sophomore Chris Decker has a favorite station at Redifer Dining Commons: "In a Pickle." But the deli section of the cafeteria in South Halls isn't his favorite place to eat, it's his favorite place to work. Decker, a hotel, restaurant and institutional management major (HRIM), is completing a paid internship for course credit in the dining hall for 16 weeks this fall.
