The newest exhibit in the Penn State Harrisburg Library, "American Women and Modern Culture, 1890-1920," on display until Feb. 8, has been re-purposed with a new twist - mobility. Based upon the work of students in Dr. Erin Battat's Women and the American Experience course, the exhibit can now hit the road, with plans underway to have it on display at other Penn State campuses this spring.

The Penn State Harrisburg schedule of summer courses is now available at Penn State's Schedule of Courses. You can see the course list and other information at the college's summer site. More information will be added to the listings as it becomes available. Registration for the summer 2013 semester opens to students Feb. 5. Summer sessions begin May 13 and June 26.

The Penn State Harrisburg choir will accompany two-time Grammy award winner vocalist Rita Coolidge at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, in Sunoco Performance Theater of Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, located in downtown Harrisburg, Pa.

This year, each of Penn State Harrisburg's five academic schools presented an Alumni Achievement Award to one of their graduates who demonstrates outstanding professional accomplishment. The awards, bestowed during the Alumni Awards Dinner, held in conjunction with Homecoming on Oct. 12, honor a diverse collection of talents and accomplishments from across the college.

Luke Kempski, a 1995 master's of education in training and development graduate, received the Alumni Achievement Award from the School of Behavioral Science and Education. The School of Business Administration presented its Alumni Achievement Award to E. Philip Wenger, who holds a bachelor's degree in finance (1979) and a master of business administration (1987) from Penn State Harrisburg. Kathy Marley-Dunbar received the School of Humanities' Alumni Achievement Award. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree in American studies from Penn State Harrisburg (1989 and 1993). The School of Public Affairs recognized Richard White, a 1997 graduate of the college's doctoral program in public administration, with its Alumni Achievement Award. John Mason Jr., a 1972 Penn State Harrisburg transportation technology graduate, received the Alumni Achievement Award presented by the School of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Penn State Harrisburg School of Humanities faculty members Eric Bliman and Jen Hirt have won national awards for their short publications. Bliman, instructor in English composition, received one of two 2012 National Chapbook Fellowships from the Poetry Society of America, which will publish his chapbook, "Travel and Leisure," in the spring. Bliman, of Middletown, Pa., will read from his entry at the society's headquarters in New York, also in the spring. Hirt, assistant professor of creative writing, won the 2012 Gabehart Prize for Nonfiction from the Kentucky Women Writers Conference for her essay, "Glow in the Dark." Hirt, of Harrisburg, Pa., read her winning entry, about a night she spent with bat researchers in rural Kentucky, at the conference, held Sept. 21 and 22 at the University of Kentucky.

Simon Bronner, Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Folklore and chair of the American Studies program at Penn State Harrisburg, recently published a comprehensive review of student traditions in college culture. In "Campus Traditions: Folklore from the Old-Time College to the Modern Mega-University," Bronner's 496-page investigation delves into issues such as hazing, cheating, drugs and alcohol abuse, sports and extreme college rivalries, and sexuality, and tracks their changes over time.

Robert Zausner, author of this year's Common Reading Program book for first-year students, will speak from noon to 1 p.m. and also from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, in Capital Union Building, room 210 at Penn State Harrisburg.
