Rescue missions under way to save Haiti's species from mass extinction

Haiti is on the brink of an era of mass extinctions similar to the time when dinosaurs and many other species suddenly disappeared from the Earth, reports a biologist at Penn State, who announced on Nov. 16 the establishment of a species-rescue program for Haiti's threatened frogs and other species, including captive-breeding and gene-preservation efforts.

LifeLink PSU students sacrifice vacation to help with Haitian recovery

A group of State College Area School District (SCASD) special education students who meet daily in a classroom in the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus has decided to donate their class trip fund to earthquake relief and rebuilding effort in Haiti. LifeLink PSU is a unique program in which Penn State student mentors and members of SCASD's Department of Special Education provide college-aged SCASD students with disabilities with a transition from high school to adult life through interactions with more commonly-aged peers and the opportunity to attend college-level courses of their choosing.

Medical center's first medical mission team to Haiti to talk March 15

Members of the Penn State Hershey team who joined the first Operation Smile/Partners in Health-sponsored medical mission trip to Haiti in January and February will talk about their experience during an evening presentation and question-and-answer session on Monday, March 15 in the Edward P. "Ted" Junker Auditorium on the campus of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The presentation, by the Penn State College of Medicine Global Health Center, begins at 7 p.m., and will feature photographs taken by J. Spence Reid during the team's mission trip. Light refreshments will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m. All members of the campus community and members of the public are welcome to attend.

Donations for Haitian earthquake victims top $700

Penn State Beaver students have raised more than $700 for Haitian earthquake victims through the "For the Love of Haiti" project sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA). Fundraising efforts will continue throughout March, and all donations will be given to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Students support Haiti with fundraisers at local restaurants

The Penn State Berks student group "We Are ... Helping Haiti @ Berks," in conjunction with the college's Intercultural Communication: Theory & Research class, will hold its second fundraising event at Issac's Restaurant and Deli at the Village Square Shopping Center at 94 Commerce Drive in Wyomissing, Pa., from 5 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 18. Issac's has agreed to donate 25 percent of their earnings, but only for those who present the flier.

To date, more than $600 has been collected by Penn State Beaver students through the "For the Love of Haiti" project, which is sponsored by the Penn State Student Government Association (SGA). Closer look: Project Haiti president Alain Bonny

Project Haiti is a Penn State student organization created in 1997 by Father Fred Byrne, with the intent to make Penn State students more aware of the economic differences between Haiti and the United States and to raise funds and awareness for Haiti. Every semester students from Project Haiti volunteer their time over spring break to live, work and play alongside Haitians. The students' goal is to be in "solidarity" with Haitians, which involves a true perseverance to helping the common good of all and not just a vague compassion of others' plight.

Project Haiti President Alain Bonny tells of Haitian children eating dirt to calm their pained stomachs. He speaks of his parents who immigrated to the United States from Haiti, and of the homeless families who can be seen living outside of a Haitian airport. And Bonny speaks of three relatives who were killed in the recent earthquake.

Faculty, students gather to hear first-person stories of Haitian life

On Jan. 26, Penn State faculty and students gathered in the Global Programs Lounge in 410 Boucke Building to experience the life and culture of Haiti through the pictures and stories of Antoinette Pressley-Sanon. Pressley-Sanon, Africana research post-doctoral fellow and research associate in comparative literature and African and African-American studies at Penn State, is of Haitian decent. Her presentation opened the audience's eyes to the historic and artistic aspects of a country that has recently been in the news because of a major earthquake. In the aftermath many were left homeless, injured or dead. Although Pressley-Sanon described the earthquake was a horrible event, she said there is much more to Haiti than the current destruction.

5k run/walk at University Park campus to benefit Haitian orphanage

On Feb. 6, runners and walkers can take part in a 5-kilometer event to benefit a Haitian orphanage destroyed by last month's massive earthquake. The event will begin at 11 a.m. at the Intramural Building on Penn State's University Park campus. The registration form is available at http://tinyurl.com/run4Haiti online, at the HUB-Robeson Center through Feb. 5, and on the day of the race from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. The race begins at 11 a.m.

Penn State Hershey medical mission team to head home from Haiti

The medical mission team comprised of Penn State Hershey Medical Center doctors and nurses that has been treating quake victims in Haiti for nearly two weeks is set to hand off their patient care responsibilities and return to Hershey this week. Though they have endured stifling heat, lack of sleep and limited access to essentials like running water and electricity, team members say they will remember most the gratitude and grace of the Haitian people they helped care for.

Haiti relief group to hold Valentine's Day event

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Penn State Berks students have formed a campus organization called "We Are ... Helping Haiti @ Berks." The group is holding a Valentines Day fundraiser titled "PS(i love)U" to benefit the victims of the earthquake through Feb. 15. In addition, the student group is planning several other fundraising activities, including selling Help Haiti apparel and holding events such as a Haiti Awareness Week, a spades tournament, and a faculty vs. student sports challenge.
