For the second year, Penn State will participate in the 2013 Dow Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge Awards. SISCA is designed to promote forward thinking in social and environmental responsibility; while also acknowledging the energy, commitment, and enthusiasm of students and their professors who support their innovations. Graduate students and faculty from Penn State are encouraged to join an international field of universities that are involved in the program.
Five teams of graduate students have been selected as finalists in the Dow-sponsored Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge Award (SISCA) at Penn State. The program recognizes and rewards students and universities for innovation and research of sustainable solutions to the world's most pressing social, economic and environmental problems.
Gwen McGhan, registered nurse and former project administrator for Penn State's Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence in the School of Nursing, has been selected to participate in the Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program, starting in fall 2010. The program, co-created by the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, is designed to increase the number of well-qualified geriatric nursing faculty in the nation and to help ensure that all nurses are prepared to care for our rapidly aging population.
The Graduate School Alumni Society (GSAS) is accepting nominations for the GSAS Lifetime Achievement Award through Oct. 1. This award honors graduate alumni of Penn State who have achieved exceptional success throughout the course of their profession and have demonstrated a lifetime of service and contributions to their community, as well as loyalty to the University and the Penn State Alumni Association. Graduate students are invited to an informal coffee hour, sponsored by the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, where they can come together, share teaching ideas, concerns and resources. The event will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, in room 312 at the HUB-Robeson Center.
In August, Penn State student Lindsay Usher found herself face to face with six-foot waves off the coast of Portugal with nothing to protect her but a paddle and a kayak. Luckily, Usher had been in this situation before and she knew how to handle the surge of water. She soon found herself at a wave's crest, visible to the crowd on shore. There were cheers as she rode the wave in and she was awarded third place in the women's longboat division of the World Surf Kayak Championships.
Penn State is home to 14 new National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recipients in 2009-10. These students join 16 prior recipients already enrolled in the University's graduate degree programs. The NSF program supports outstanding graduate students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees.
A half-day orientation program for all new Penn State graduate students, sponsored by the Graduate School, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, in Room 100 of the Thomas Building on the University Park campus. Sessions during the orientation will cover important topics such as plagiarism, graduate student life, and health insurance.
Penn State graduate students now have unlimited renewals on regular loans of books from University Libraries' collections. By taking this user-centered approach University Libraries will eliminate a small measure of stress for a core group of almost 12,000 users during a very hectic time of year.
