Four men's golfers named to Division I PING All-Northeast Regional Team

Four Penn State men's golfers were selected to the Division I PING All-Northeast Regional Team, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The honorees included senior Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.); sophomores Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.); and freshman Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.).

The Penn State women's golf team qualified for the NCAA Championships and will begin play in the East Regional hosted by Auburn University. This is the first time since the 2002-03 season that the team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Conference to focus on educating participants in golf turf management

When it comes to golf course management, there is a lot more to know than how to run a mower. Education is crucial with a growing demand for personnel trained to manage turfgrass. Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences is helping to fill that need by offering a conference that will provide information about golf course management to practitioners, industry representatives and students. The 2012 Penn State Golf Turf Conference will be held Nov. 13 to 15 at the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus. Some of the best and brightest in the industry, including United States Golf Association agronomists, university turfgrass experts, golf course superintendents, industry representatives, graduate students and others will share their expertise and cover important topics.

After earning a spot on the PGA Web.com Tour, former Penn State men's golfer Kevin Foley continues his journey to becoming the first Nittany Lion to qualify for the PGA Tour through his competition at the Tour Championship Oct. 25-28. After round one at the TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas Thursday, Foley sits tied for 13th place with a 3-under-par score of 68.

The Penn State New Kensington men's soccer and women's volleyball teams conclude their regular seasons this week with both teams looking to continue to the post-season. The soccer team is looking to lock-up the third-seed in the upcoming Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) playoffs. The volleyball team has the inside track on its first playoff berth since 2008.

The Penn State New Kensington men's soccer and women's volleyball teams are home this week for conference matches that will influence the postseason playoffs. Soccer, ranked sixth nationally in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, meets eighth-ranked Penn College at 3 p.m. today (Oct. 11) at Valley high School in New Kensington, Pa. The showdown features the second-place New Kensington Lions, 6-1, and the first-place PC Wildcats, 7-0. The volleyball team makes a push for a playoff berth on Saturday (Oct. 13) with a Penn State University Athletic Conference tri-match in the Athletics Center. New Kensington golfer Adam Stawski wins conference championship

Penn State New Kensington junior Adam Stawski (Plum) shot a 2-over 74 for a two-round total of 152 (78-74) to win the Penn State University Athletic Conference individual title at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa. Stawski came back from a three-shot first-round deficit with a one-under 35 on the back nine (his front nine), that included an eagle at the par-5 18th. The PSUAC crown avenged his runner-up finish as a freshman in 2009. As a team, the New Kensington Lions held onto third place in the eight-team conference championships, 12 strokes behind second-place Penn College (339-339-678). Penn State Mont Alto won the title with a 313-336-649 tally. Sophomore Ben Hammel (Riverview) carded an 85-84-169 to finish in eighth place and join Stawski on the PSUAC ALL-Conference team. Senior Matt Schrader (West Shamokin) shot 82-92-174. Freshman Corey Boback (Hempfield) shot his collegiate-best 92 in the final round to secure third place for New Kensington at 348-342-690.

Junior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) was named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week, conference officials announced Wednesday (Oct. 3). This is the second honor of the season for the Nittany Lions as junior Christina Vosters was honored on Sept. 12.

The Penn State New Kensington men's soccer team continues its march toward a first regular season conference title at 2 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 6) when Penn State Hazleton visits for a PSUAC match at Valley High School. The two undefeated teams will be jockeying for the top seed in the Penn State University Athletic Conference playoffs that begin Oct. 22. The New Kensington Lions sport a 6-0 record, a half-game ahead of Penn College, 5-0. Hazleton is 4-0, one game behind. Under the direction of first-year head coach Pat Cavanaugh, the team is ranked third in the nation in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association poll.

Penn State New Kensington's Adam Stawski was named national and conference Golf Player of the Week for Sept. 24 to 30. Stawski, a junior math major from Plum High School, was honored by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) after shooting 75 on Sept. 26 to win the Penn State Brandywine Invitational by 5 strokes at Edgmont Country Club in Edgemont, Pa. His score led his team to a fifth place finish in the tournament.
