Campus THON activities continue with fitness night, spaghetti dinner
With a month to go before the granddaddy of fundraising events, Penn State New Kensington is picking up the donations pace in January with a series of activities that supports Penn State's annual dance marathon, aka THON. The schedule includes a fitness night, spaghetti dinner and tossing pies at your favorite professors.
New Kensington flea market to benefit THON
Laying the groundwork for THON 2013, Penn State New Kensington is holding its first Flea Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 6, in the campus Conference Center. In order to provide variety, the campus THON committee is accepting items for the sale from Oct. 29 through Nov. 2. Alumni and friends in the community are encouraged to clean out their closets and bring their "treasures" to the Conference Center that week. They are invited back the following week to shop. The public is invited to donate and buy items. Articles not sold on Nov. 6 will be tagged at half-price and sold from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7. All proceeds benefit THON.
Golf tournament benefits softball program
A golf scramble to benefit the Penn State New Kensington women's softball team tees it up at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Apollo Elks Country Club. The cost is $80 and includes a hot dog and soft drink at the turn, dinner and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams along with skill prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Alumni and friends can sign up as a team or individually. Tee sponsors are available. All proceeds are earmarked for the team's preseason trip south during spring break 2013. The golf course is located at 151 Elks Lodge Rd. Apollo, Pa. Penn State Greater Allegheny announces new development director
Joseph Edmiston became the director of development at Penn State Greater Allegheny effective June 1. Edmiston came to Greater Allegheny from his position as advancement director at Madonna High School in Weirton, W.V.
Blues and White Gala raises nearly $40,000 for student scholarships
The fourth annual Blues and White Gala scholarship fundraising event hosted by Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus May 12 raised nearly $40,000 for student scholarships. This brings the total of Blues and White scholarship funds to $138,000 over the four years the gala has been held.
Tickets still available for benefit baseball game June 22
Tickets are still available for the Friday, June 22, baseball matchup between the York Revolution and the Lancaster Barnstormers at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York, Pa. Local Penn State fans are invited to enjoy a picnic, watch the game and raise money for Penn State York's Pay it Forward Scholarship. Fans, friends, family, alumni and others are welcome to join the group. The event will begin with a two-hour buffet catered by Maewyn's Irish Pub and Restaurant at 5:45 p.m., with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $13 for youth (4 to 10 years old), and half of the purchase price will go to the Pay It Forward Scholarship Fund. The purchase price includes the buffet, the baseball game and a T-shirt, and youth tickets include a playground wristband.

Fans, friends, family, alumni, and others are invited to join the group, beginning with a two-hour buffet catered by Maewyn's Irish Pub and Restaurant at 5:45 p.m., with the game to follow at 6:30 p.m. Ticket includes the buffet, baseball game, and a T-shirt, all for $25 for adults and $13 for youth (4-10-years-old). Half of the ticket price goes to the Pay It Forward Scholarship Fund.
Youth tickets include a playground wristband.
Save the Date: Annual golf outing moved to September
The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association will host its annual golf outing on Monday, Sept. 19, at Moselem Springs Golf Club in Fleetwood, Pa. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Jack Cooney Scholarship and the Don Klein Cultural Enrichment Fund that supports Penn State Lehigh Valley and its students. Fundraiser will benefit injured Beaver campus student
Friends and family of Andrew Narvett will host a spaghetti dinner and silent auction from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Center Township Volunteer Fire Department. Andrew, a Penn State Beaver business major, suffered severe injuries in an automobile accident in September. Beaver campus students, faculty and staff are donating funds as well as contributing a basket for the silent auction.
Still Life: Thousands run 'FTK'
More than 4,000 THON supporters participated in the 2010 THON 5K on Sunday, Oct. 17. The race's 5 kilometers, which translate to just over 3 miles, started and finished at the Bryce Jordan Center on Curtin Road and stretched through the University Park campus on Curtin, Porter, Hastings, Bigler, Pollock and Fraser roads. The event is one of the larger fundraising activities to benefit the Penn State Dance Marathon during the fall semester. Penn State Live photographer Andy Colwell ran the race with roughly 50 of his fellow Blue Band members, led by Blue Band Director Richard Bundy, and he took pictures along the way. Improve your golf game and support breast cancer research Sept. 24
Penn State's PGA Golf Management Program is holding "Play Golf America Day" at the Penn State Golf Course from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 24. Participants will receive free golf lessons as part of the event; in lieu of payment, the program will be accepting donations that will benefit Par for the Cure, a fundraiser benefiting breast cancer research. Second annual 'Iron Chef' contest set for March 27
A group of Penn State students are sponsoring an "Iron Chef" contest that will benefit the State College Area Food Bank. Hosted by the Nutrition Graduate Student Association (NGSA), the second annual "Iron Chef" fundraising event pits 12 teams of students, faculty and staff in the College of Health and Human Development against each other in a culinary battle. The twist, true to the popular Food Network show "Iron Chef," is that each team will have to incorporate a secret ingredient into their meals. Two prizes will be awarded, one for most money raised, and one for best overall dish. The event, which begins at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, is free and open to the public.
