Many of us will end the holiday season with a plethora of gifts that we won't necessarily cherish: the reindeer sweater or the automatic potato peeler. While these items will find their way into the attic or be re-gifted at the next possible birthday, there are about 3 million people in the U.S. alone who can't let go of items such as these. It's known as compulsive hoarding and it's become a part of the reality-television landscape, but are the "cold turkey" methods that the on-camera therapist utilizes, the best way to help individuals? Brian Rabian, director of the psychological clinic at Penn State, weighs in on the subject.

Penn State is seeking candidates for the chancellor position at Penn State DuBois. Anita McDonald, the current chancellor, announced that she would retire at the end of the year, after almost 10 years at the campus. Though she loves her career, McDonald said she is looking forward to pursuing other interests with her husband of 42 years and to spending more time with their children and grandchildren.

"I think all parents hope deep down that we raise hardworking, responsible, respectful and resilient people, but more and more parents and educators worry today's kids are too dependent and that they feel entitled and may not be prepared to handle the challenges of an increasingly challenging world."

Penn State just beat its own record. With at least 70 students signed up to Teach for America this year (the organization will have the final numbers by fall), Penn Staters are showing their commitment to expand educational opportunities for elementary and secondary school students in low-income areas.

Throughout the continental 48 states, the 2011-12 winter has been oddly mild. While past winters in Pennsylvania and other hardy winter regions have delivered a few warm, sunny days each year like previews of spring, they usually have been surrounded by more seasonally appropriate temperatures, freezing and below. This year it seemed that very cold days were the minority, and most states had little snow.
